Hitachi Selects Multiple Cypress Timing Solutions for Wooo™ Hi-Vision™ TV Line

Last Updated: June 08, 2020

Superior Programmability and Outstanding Design Support Are Key to Design Win

SAN JOSE, Calif., October 23, 2006 - Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: CY) today announced that Hitachi, Ltd. has selected Cypress clocks for the Wooo™ 9000 series High Definition digital televisions. Five Cypress products have been designed-in to provide the precise timing necessary for the advanced Wooo systems.

The Wooo 9000 series High Definition television line-up includes both LCD and PDP models. All models have four integrated digital and analog tuners. Each model size comes with a 250-GB hard-disk drive; customers can select either an integrated or non-integrated drive. Other features include High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) ports, 10/100 MBps Ethernet ports, a SD (secure digital) card slot, and other audio-visual connectors.

The Wooo systems include Cypress's 4-PLL (phase-locked loop) programmable devices (CY22391). The CY22391 replaces multiple crystal oscillators, providing four independent frequencies and one buffered reference frequency. The programmable output frequencies range from 4.9152 to 148.5 MHz, compatible with most digital entertainment devices. The device has an integrated analog voltage controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO) with a pull range of ± 120 ppm for maximum frequency resolution and better frequency tracking. Available in a space-saving 32-pin QFN package, it also includes programmable output drive strength for EMI control and a 2.5-V option to interface with lower voltage ICs without extra circuitry. Hitachi has also designed-in multiple Cypress SSCGs (Spread-Spectrum Clock Generators) in the Wooo series.

"The programmability of the Cypress clock chips allowed us to configure the same base device in multiple models, and allowed us to accommodate changes throughout the design and production cycles," said Tatsuo Nagata, Engineer of the FPD Development Division of Hitachi, Ltd. "In addition, the Cypress application team provided excellent support during the design-in process."

"Providing comprehensive timing for one of the world's most advanced TV systems is a testament to the value of our integrated programmable technology in the digital entertainment area," said Wayne Gill, managing director of Cypress's General-Purpose Clock Business Unit. "We look forward to working with leaders such as Hitachi on future generations of multimedia systems."
