Fujitsu Chooses Cypress TrueTouch™ Touchscreen Solution for New docomo PRIME series F-01B Mobile Phone
Advanced, Water-Resistant Touchscreen Phone Uses
Flexible PSoC®-Based Solution for Attractive, Durable Interface
SAN JOSE, Calif., February 17, 2010 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: CY) today announced that Fujitsu Limited has selected the TrueTouch™ solution from Cypress to implement the water-resistant touchscreen in NTT DOCOMO’s new handset, the docomo PRIME series F-01B mobile phone. The flexible TrueTouch solution, based on the PSoC® programmable system-on-chip architecture, offered proven performance, durability and programmability from the docomo PRIME series F-01A phone.
The docomo PRIME series F-01B phone offers an impressive list of features, including its 3.4-inch VGA display with user-friendly touch control. It integrates a 12.2-megapixel high-quality camera with face detection and a “smile-finder” function, a fingerprint scanner and a link for Blu-ray disc recorders. The new phone leverages the unique TrueTouch water-resistant capability to help meet the IPX5/7/8 standard for water-resistance, meaning the phone’s camera can be used underwater at a depth of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes.
Cypress is demonstrating the TrueTouch touchscreen solution, as well as peripheral and mass storage controllers and precision motion sensing technology for handsets, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona from February 15-18 in Hall 1, Booth 1F53.
“Having a handheld leader such as Fujitsu design the TrueTouch solution into multiple generations of phones is outstanding validation of its ease-of-use and reliable performance,” said Norm Taffe, executive vice president of Cypress’s Consumer and Computation Division. “The TrueTouch solution is earning repeat customer wins around the world, and we are already expanding our touchscreen leadership position with our established multitouch all-point technology and advanced new features.”
Cypress’s TrueTouch family includes single-touch, multitouch and “multitouch all-point” offerings. Cypress was the first company to introduce multitouch all-point functionality, which can track an unlimited number of touches. This capability enables designers to create new usage models for products such as mobile handsets, portable media players (PMPs), GPS systems and other products, and has been in mass production since 2008. TrueTouch is the industry’s most flexible touchscreen solution, as the unique PSoC architecture allows designers to implement differentiated features and make last-minute design iterations without board changes.
Cypress recently announced its next-generation high performance TMA300 multi-touch all-point family. This controller provides best-in-class scan times for true multifinger touch and superior signal-to-noise ratio for the most demanding touchscreen applications. “The docomo PRIME series F-01A and F-01B phones are both well recognized in Japan for their impressive list of features,” said Hitoshi Yoshizawa, Japan country manager for Cypress. “The flexibility of the TrueTouch solution is likewise well received among Japanese handset makers for enabling top-of-the-line products in the world’s most advanced phone market.”
The flexible TrueTouch solution allows customers to rapidly develop leading-edge solutions without having to buy turnkey modules. They have a choice of using touch sensors (glass or film) and LCDs from preferred partners, and can develop innovative mechanical designs ranging from flat to curved surfaces of varying thickness. In addition, TrueTouch devices offer Cypress’s legendary noise immunity with patented capacitive sensing technology that enables flawless operation in noisy RF and LCD environments.
PSoC -- Because Change Happens
PSoC devices employ a highly configurable system-on-chip architecture for embedded control design, offering a flash-based equivalent of a field-programmable ASIC without lead-time or NRE penalties. PSoC devices integrate configurable analog and digital circuits, controlled by an on-chip microcontroller, providing both enhanced design revision capability and component count savings. A single PSoC device can integrate as many as 100 peripheral functions saving customers design time, board space and power consumption while improving system quality and reducing system cost.
