Cypress’ Four-Chip Dock Solution Brings USB-C Connectivity and Power Delivery to Samsung DeX
USB-C Connects Smartphones to Various Computer Peripherals and Provides Fast Power Charging to Create Unique Mobile Desktop User Experience
SAN JOSE, Calif., May 10, 2017 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: CY), the market leader in USB-C, today announced that its USB-C technology is enabling people to use their smartphones as a desktop computer with the Samsung DeX Station. The Samsung DeX allows users to dock their Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones via a USB-C port and use apps, review documents, and set or check notifications in a desktop environment, as well as send and receive text messages and make phone calls. Cypress’ four-chip USB-C dock solution charges phones quickly through the USB-C port and provides plug-and-play connectivity to a monitor, keyboard, mouse and a variety of USB peripherals. “The innovative Samsung DeX is a critical piece in making the smartphone-as-a-pocket-PC usage model a reality, and we’re proud that Cypress USB-C is supporting this new class of enterprise application,” said Ajay Srikrishna, vice president of the Wired Connectivity Business Unit at Cypress. “We optimized our USB-C dock solution to charge smartphones while providing the simple, one-cable connection from the smartphone to the peripherals needed to create a desktop experience.”
Cypress’ robust USB-C dock solution enables multiple functions on the DeX Station. Two EZ-PD™ CCG2 CYPD2122 controllers enable power delivery and smart device charging, with one controlling power upstream to the smartphone and the other controlling power downstream to peripherals. The CYP65632 USB 2.0 hub controller allows two USB devices and an Ethernet port to connect to the host smartphone. The CY7C65210 billboard controller enables an improved user experience by preventing connection failures due to mismatched capabilities between peripherals and the smartphone, while enabling firmware upgrades to both USB-C controllers.
About Cypress’ EZ-PD Portfolio
Cypress’ EZ-PD portfolio of USB-C controllers includes CCG1, the world’s first programmable USB-C controller, CCG2, the market’s smallest programmable USB-C solution, CCG3 controller the market’s most integrated USB-C solution and CCG4, the world’s first two-port USB-C solution. The EZ-PD portfolio was the first to support the USB PD 3.0 specification, which enables more robust end-to-end power delivery and charging solutions for laptops and other mobile devices.
The USB Type-C standard is gaining adoption with top-tier electronics manufacturers by enabling slim industrial designs, easy-to-use connectors and cables, and the ability to transmit multiple protocols and deliver up to 100W of power. The USB Type-C standard’s reversible 2.4-mm-high connector is significantly smaller than the 4.5-mm USB Standard-A connector. In addition to the transport of USB signals, DisplayPort, HDMI and Thunderbolt signals can be delivered over the same connector via the USB Type-C standard’s Alternate Mode capability.
