Cypress Delivers Design Support For Industry's Highest-Capacity Network Search Engines
Cynapse(TM) Software and Hardware Design Tools Enable Design-In Of Innovative Algorithmic Forwarding Solution
SAN JOSE, Calif., March 23, 2004 - Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE:CY) today announced availability of extensive hardware and software design tools for its Sahasra 50000 network search engine (NSE). The Cynapse(TM) design tools enable designers of networking control-plane software and packet processors to begin development of systems with Cypress's Sahasra 50000 NSE. The Sahasra device is the industry's first algorithmic search engine to combine the ease of use of a ternary content addressable memory (TCAM) with the increased routing capacity of an algorithmic search solution.

The Cynapse software support includes the table manager, API, and device model that allow system software designers to begin development of critical control plane software in advance of silicon availability. By providing a production-ready table manager source code and high-level API, Cypress enables customers to minimize time-to-market and software development cost.
To ensure that a customer's hardware and software development schedules are aligned, the Cynapse toolset includes the Sahasra Verilog hardware model. Because the interface of the Sahasra NSE is logically and electrically compatible with Cypress's Ayama(TM) 10000 family of NSEs, designers can migrate to the higher forwarding table capacity of Sahasra with minimal impact on their packet processor, whether it is an ASIC or FPGA.

The Sahasra 50000 NSE family uses advanced search algorithms and integrated SRAM to achieve cost per route and power of DRAM solutions, while achieving the ease of use, deterministic latency, and high performance (250 million searches per second) of TCAM-based NSEs. Able to store 1.5 million IPv4 routes in a single chip, Sahasra addresses the search needs of systems requiring large forwarding tables, such as core routers and Layer 3 switches. The Sahasra family is available in two densities, supporting 1.5 million or 650K IPv4 routes. The device is scheduled to sample in Q3 2004.

Cypress's Network Search Engines
The Ayama 10000 family of NSEs maintains the Cypress lead in the commercial TCAM market by extending the density and speed of the NSE70000 family: density options of 4-Mbit, 9-Mbit and 18-Mbit with speeds up to 266 MSPS. In addition, the Ayama 10000 family addresses system's power and latency concerns with differentiated features such as Mini-Key(TM) power management and Soft Priority(TM) table management. Mini-Key power management reduces power by engaging only the portion of the NSE array that contains entries of interest, thereby reducing power consumption by as much as 70%. Soft Priority table management enables dynamic prioritization of entries for longest prefix match (LPM) in Layer 3 forwarding applications, eliminating the latency associated with routing table updates.
Building on the Ayama 10000 family, the Ayama 20000 NSE is a high-performance TCAM-based network search engine that seamlessly connects to the Network Processing Forum (NPF) approved LA-1 interface-based commercial NPUs. The Ayama 20000 NSE has several key features such as two LA-1 ports for ingress/egress database sharing, automatic address generation for associated data, support for aging, and patent-pending dynamic power management. The Ayama 20000 NSE is available in 9-Mbit and 18-Mbit densities; at 266-million searches per second (MSPS) it is the highest-performance LA-1 based NSE in the market.
In addition to TCAM-based solutions, Cypress is the only vendor to also offer an Algorithmic SRAM-based forwarding search engine. The Sahasra(TM) 50000 NSE is a family of algorithmic search engines optimized for large forwarding tables in applications such as virtual router forwarding (VRF) and virtual private network (VPNs) that need greater than one-million table entries. The Sahasra NSE family can achieve 250 MSPS, at a fraction of the power and cost of existing TCAM-based search solutions.
