Agilent Technologies and Cypress Introduce LED-Based Optical Mouse Reference Design Kit

Last Updated: December 15, 2004

Combination USB-PS/2 Solution Simplifies Development, Speeds Time-to-Market for Designers of Desktop and Notebook PCs

PALO ALTO and SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 15, 2004 -- Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) and Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: CY), the market leader in USB, today introduced a combination Universal Serial Bus (USB)-PS/2 reference design kit for high-performance corded optical mice. The kit gives manufacturers the technical instructions and firmware needed to quickly implement a new optical mouse design.

The optical mouse reference design is based on the Cypress CY7C63743A-PC microcontroller and the Agilent ADNS-3060 optical mouse sensor, which provide superior performance and tracking control compared with previous-generation, LED-based optical mice.

"Agilent and Cypress have collaborated on several optical mouse reference design kits that address low-cost, wireless and performance market segments," said Ed Keane, navigation sensors business manager for Agilent's Sensor Solutions Division. "Our latest joint reference design provides manufacturers with a cost-effective, easy-to-use platform for accelerated development of high-performance corded optical mice."

"Joining forces with Agilent has once again enabled the teaming of two best-of-breed technologies to create a robust solution for our OEM customers," said Trevor Davis, director of marketing for the Personal Communications Division at Cypress. "The kit includes everything a mouse manufacturer needs to rapidly create a new class of higher-performance, LED-based optical mice for desktop and notebook PCs."

About Agilent's Optical Mouse Sensor
The Agilent ADNS-3060 LED-based optical mouse sensor provides excellent tracking control and high-performance operation for corded optical mice. The sensor uses a self-adjusting frame rate that automatically matches to surface characteristics for optimum performance. In addition, the ADNS-3060 offers the following features:

o 3.3 volt operation
o Power-down current consumption of 90 uA
o Maximum clock frequency of 24 MHz
o Maximum speed of 40 inches-per-second at 6,400 frames-per-second
o Resolution of up to 800 counts-per-inch (CPI)

About Cypress's CY7C63743A-PC Microcontroller
The Cypress CY7C63743A-PC is an 8-bit RISC microcontroller with an integrated USB serial interface engine. High-performance, low-cost human interface peripherals such as optical mice can be implemented with a minimum of external components and firmware effort. Communication between the CY7C63743A-PC microcontroller and the ADNS-3060 sensor is accomplished through the integrated serial peripheral interface. The combination USB-PS/2 microcontroller also offers these important features:

o 12 MHz internal CPU clock
o 256 bytes of RAM
o 8 Kbytes of EPROM
o Built-in clock oscillator and timers
o Programmable drive strength and pull-up resistors on each I/O line
