CCG1 USB Type-C to DisplayPort Cable Solution
The Type-C to DisplayPort cable solution enables connectivity between a USB Type-C receptacle and DisplayPort (DP) or Mini DisplayPort (mDP) receptacle.
This cable solution will have a Type-C plug on one end and DP/mDP plug on the other end. The cable solution meets the requirements described in Section 4.2 of the VESA DisplayPort Alt Mode on USB Type-C Standard Version 1.0 (Scenarios 2a and 2b USB Type-C to DisplayPort Cables). The adapter solution supports display output at resolution of up to 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160) at 60Hz. The solution also supports the USB Billboard Device Class used to communicate the DisplayPort Alternate Mode to a host system which does not support the DisplayPort mode.
VESA defines different pin assignments on the USB Type-C connector when sending and receiving DisplayPort signals. Cypress provides the option to configure your pin assignment on the USB Type-C connector for Display port or Protocol convertors (HDMI, DVI, VGA etc.). The cable solution uses 2 Cypress devices; CCG1 – a Type-C Port Controller and USB-Serial – a USB Billboard controller. Cypress also has a CCG2 based solution for USB Type-C to DisplayPort adapter. You can find the schematics and BOM for this solution here.
CCG1 (CYPD1120) is Cypress’s first generation Type-C port controller which supports the DisplayPort as an Alternate Mode using the USB Type-C connector, in which several pins on the USB Type-C connector are re-configured to support the DisplayPort interface. CCG1 for the Type-C to DisplayPort cable solution is available in two packages, 35-CSP and 40-QFN. Cypress’s USB Billboard controller (CY7C65210) on this cable solution is a Full-Speed USB 2.0 device that supports the USB Billboard Device Class. This device is available in a 24-QFN package.
CY7C65210 belongs to Cypress’s USB-Serial Bridge controller family and is similar to CY7C65211 which has a configurable USB to I2C/SPI/UART channel. The USB-Serial family has an underlying powerful architecture with a Cortex-M0 and 32KB flash which allows flexible variants of products such as the CY7C65210 billboard device, simply by developing custom firmware.
Cypress has developed a demo board (not for sale) to demonstrate connectivity between Type-C and DisplayPort. This demo board contains CCG1 (CYPD1120) in a 35-ball WLCSP package, USB Billboard controller (CY7C65210) in a 24-QFN package, a Type-C plug, a DisplayPort receptacle and several passive components. SWD headers are available for programming the CYPD1120 and CY7C65210 devices.
Cypress provides latest FW and configuration files (refer to Related Files section below) for CYPD1120 based on updates to the USB-PD and USB Type-C specifications. Cypress’s EZ-PD Configuration Utility can be used to program CYPD1120 with the right firmware and configuration settings. CYPD1120 and CY7C65210 are available in production. Need help?
