The PSoC provides a one-chip solution for majority of the home appliances integrating CapSense which is industry’s best touch solution, analog sensor interface to interface various sensors for humidity temperature measurement, LED and LCD drivers for output user interface. PSoC also helps integrating other system functions like RTC, relay, motor, LED backlight, buzzer control using on-chip resources. Communication interfaces can be selected from a rich list of supported protocols by PSoC that helps communicating with host-controllers in large appliances or interfacing with external peripherals like digital sensors etc.

Design Considerations

We are tapping into the appliance revolution where homeowners want sophisiticated and elegant appliances. These products need to have capacitive buttons and slides, LCD or LED display. User want want flat surfaces that are easy to clean and buttons to be available in accesible locations in appliances. There are various challenges that you may face while designing for today’s market needs.

  1. Capacitive buttons can be unreliable
    Water droplets can cause false touches
    Curved or thick overlays reduce button performance
    Manufacturing variations require time-consuming re-tuning
    EMI can cause buttons to malfunction
    Class B safety certification is required.
  2. Extra features add cost
    Each UI system must have a host MCU and sensors
    Each analog sensor requires an additional IC
    Each additional IC raises BOM cost and design complexity
  3. Your IP is vulnerable in a common MCU
    Many websites offer reverse-engineering of MCU firmware

Development Kits/Boards

  • PSoC Programmer 3.24 or later and KitProg 2.14 or later are required to program the PSoC 4200L device on the PSoC 4 L-Series Pioneer Kit. PSoC Creator installation or the kit installation automatically installs PSoC Programmer and KitProg drivers.
