SAN JOSE, Calif., November 6, 2007 - Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: CY) announced today that the 2007 report, "The Evolution of Cellular Tactical Input," from IMS Research (Austin, Texas) cited Cypress as the industry leader for capacitive sensing in cellular handsets with more than 70 percent market share. Cypress has shipped over 40 million PSoC® CapSense™ devices into mobile phones from across the globe in less than two years, and continues to be designed into new models.
The CapSense solution offers mobile handset and other handheld device manufacturers advantages that are not available with other capacitive sensing products. The unique, reconfigurable PSoC architecture provides unmatched flexibility, enabling last-minute adjustments for new features and functions without having to do major circuit-board layout adjustments. In addition, Cypress's CapSensePLUS feature lets designers perform additional functions, such as LED control, motor control, power management and more with the same device used for capacitive sensing. This integration saves board space, manufacturing resources, power consumption and inventory requirements. These benefits also apply to end-products in all other markets.

A single CapSense device can replace dozens of mechanical switches and controls with a simple, touch-sensitive interface. CapSense-based "button" and "slider" controls are more reliable than their mechanical counterparts because they are not prone to the environmental wear-and-tear that affects exposed buttons and switches. Cypress has garnered hundreds of CapSense design wins worldwide in applications that include mobile handsets, portable media players, white goods, computers, printers and automotive, among others.
Capacitive sensing is fast becoming the solution of choice for front-panel display and media control applications. Increased durability, decreased bill of materials (BOM) and a clean, minimalist appearance make this elegant interface attractive to a wide range of designs. With Cypress's CapSense interface, a finger on the interface forms an electrical connection with embedded sensors, which work with the PSoC device to translate data about the finger's presence into various system control functions. The sensor itself is only a copper pad on the PCB, not an actual component. All of the circuitry for controlling the sensor is inside the PSoC device.

PSoC devices are configurable mixed signal arrays that integrate a fast 8-bit microcontroller with many peripheral functions typically found in an embedded design.
