Clocking Solution Addresses Critical Electromagnetic Interference Issues
In Next-Generation Notebook PCs
SAN JOSE, Calif., December 8, 2004 - Cypress Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE: CY), a world leader in timing technology solutions, today announced sample availability of a single-chip solution that fully addresses the timing and electromagnetic interference (EMI) reduction requirements of notebook PCs.  Cypress's CY28442, which combines a frequency timing generator and a Peak Reducing EMI Solutions (PREMIS(TM)) spread-spectrum clock generator, meets Intel's CK410m and CK-SSCD specifications and definitions for its low-power Alviso platform for notebook PCs.

Today, notebook PCs are beginning to rival desktop performance.  The addition of superfast processors, wide-screen displays, DVD burners and state-of-the-art graphics has put rigorous demands on system clocks.  Not only do the clock speeds need to be fast, but EMI reduction is also becoming critical as notebooks become thinner.  To meet these challenges, Cypress has taken its high-performance reference clock-supporting bus speeds of up to 800 MHz (Alviso runs at 533 MHz)-and teamed it with the industry's best EMI reduction technology.

"The latest generation of notebook PCs are "entertainment-on-the-go" systems," said Elie Ayache, director of marketing for Cypress's Timing Technology Division.  "The CY28442 teams best-in-class signal integrity and lowest frequency jitter into one small package."

The CY28442 combines a system main clock generator-designed to generate all frequency and timing signals-with a spread-spectrum clock generator, a requirement for an Alviso-based notebook PC.  The device supports all the timing requirements for the processor, memory controllers, graphics, USB, Serial ATA and PCI Express.  The CY28442 integrates state-of-the-art programmable spread-spectrum technology to help reduce EMI across the entire system and designers to select multiple combinations of processor frequency and spread-spectrum clocking features through the I2C programmable interface.

Both the CY28442 is available now and comes in a 56-pin TSSOP priced at $1.80 per unit in 1,000 unit quantities.
