Cypress Introduces Low-Power, Low-Cost Interconnect Solutions For Leading-Edge Consumer Electronics Products

Dual-ports provide a cost-effective solution to shorten time-to-market
For converging digital home electronics applications

SAN JOSE, Calif., January 18, 2006 - Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: CY) today introduced a family of asynchronous dual-port interconnects with the industry's lowest power consumption and smallest footprint. The new devices serve as an easy communication mechanism between two processing units in modular system designs, providing throughput of up to 400 Mbps. The products reduce software overhead, save processing time, and shorten time to market for converging digital home appliances such as Internet Protocol Digital Set Top Boxes (IP-DSTBs), Digital Video Recorders (DVRs), Voice-over-IP (VoIP) applications and media gateways.

The consumer dual-port interconnect family offers a cost-effective, timely solution for the consumer electronics market, which is challenged to provide new services such as triple play and on-demand video. The increase in features and functions has led to different application-specific processing units needing to share data. Cypress's new devices serve as an interconnect solution, providing simplified interprocessor communication to allow designers a modular architecture for quick turnaround on designs.

"We were looking to get to market quickly with a converged system comprising of existing sub systems for IP networking and DVD processing. Cypress helped us achieve this with their dual-port interconnects in a cost-effective manner," said Limit Wu, director of engineering at Flexcomm Technology (Shenzhen) Ltd.
"Cypress has established leadership in the interconnect and buffer memory market by delivering innovative solutions for many years," said Alakesh Chetia, product marketing director for Cypress's Data Communications Division. "The new consumer dual-ports provide our customers with a modular, quick-time-to-market interconnect solution, and also complement Cypress's growing consumer portfolio of capacitive touch interfaces, clocks, memory and USB devices to provide a one-stop shop for customers."

Cypress's consumer dual-ports are designed specifically for today's consumer appliances with ASSP-based processing solutions. These appliances demand short time-to-market and easy interface with the processors without software overhead, in addition to low price, high performance and low power. Cypress's consumer dual-ports offer the only interconnect solution that meets all the criteria.

Along with power consumption and footprint advantages, the new consumer dual-ports integrate numerous new features, including:

  • Mailbox - Enables easy notification of memory share between processors
  • I/O Registers - Saves GPIO on processors
  • High-speed Access - Allows access time of up to 40 ns.

Availability and Pricing
Consumer dual-port interconnects are currently in full production and are available in a small footprint, lead-free 100-pin TQFP package. The devices come in five different organizations: the CYDC256B16 is 16K x 16, the CYDC128B16 is 8K x 16, the CYDC064B16 is 4K x 16, the CYDC128B08 is 16K x 8 and the CYDC064B08 is 8K x 8. Pricing in 100,000-unit quantities is $2.25 each.
