Cypress and Torex Semiconductor Announce Joint Solution For High-Performance Wireless Human Interface Devices

Torex family of DC/DC converters optimized to extend battery life for wireless peripherals
Designed with Cypress's WirelessUSB™ radio SoC and microcontrollers

SAN JOSE, Calif. and TOKYO, January 19, 2006 - Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: CY) today announced a partnership with Torex Semiconductor Ltd. of Tokyo, whereby Torex will offer a family of step-up DC/DC converters optimized for operation with Cypress's WirelessUSB™ 2.4-GHz radio SoC (system-on-a-chip) and microcontrollers for human interface devices (HIDs).

Step-up DC/DC converters efficiently convert a changing input voltage, such as the voltage of a battery, to a constant output voltage. In some system configurations, an external step-up DC/DC converter may be necessary to maintain proper operation in battery-powered devices, such as wireless mice and keyboards, in which battery voltage steadily decreases with usage. A step-up DC/DC converter also allows the use of a single battery cell, or multiple battery cells in parallel, to power devices that would normally require multiple battery cells in series to achieve a higher output voltage. This enables smaller and longer-life wireless peripherals.

Torex's new family of step-up DC/DC converters extends the built-in power management capabilities of WirelessUSB. These devices can be used by customers who are interested in building WirelessUSB-based peripherals that operate on a single AA/AAA battery cell or parallel AA/AAA battery cells. The new devices can also be used in WirelessUSB-based optical mice that utilize optical sensors operating at voltage levels above 2.7V.

"Cypress's WirelessUSB and HID microcontrollers provide robust wireless connectivity to a wide range of peripherals," said Marcus Kramer, director of Cypress's HID Business Unit. "This new partnership with Torex reinforces Cypress's focus on providing high-performance, low-cost solutions for the HID market."

"Torex has built a reputation as a manufacturer of high-efficiency power supply ICs," said Koji Shibamiya, director-general of sales and department director of marketing for Torex. "Our new step-up DC/DC converters continue our tradition of anticipating market needs for longer battery life and smaller products, and pair us with the industry leader in HID technology."

About WirelessUSB
WirelessUSB delivers the best combination of performance and cost versus competing wireless technologies. Featuring a highly integrated radio transceiver plus digital baseband on a single chip, WirelessUSB enables designers to significantly decrease development time, component count and system cost while improving operating range, power-consumption and latency. The DSSS (Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum)-based technology is robust to interference and features a range of up to 50 meters and beyond.

Availability and Pricing
All four members of the new step-up DC/DC converter family are currently in full production and offer plus or minus 2 percent output voltage accuracy and automatic switching between pulse-width modulation (PWM) and pulse-frequency modulation (PFM), providing maximum operating efficiency regardless of loading conditions. The family is offered in space-saving SOT-89 and USP-6B packaging. The following chart summarizes per-unit pricing:
