Longest distance that USB can operate

Last Updated: September 12, 2011

What is the longest distance that USB can operate?

In practice, the USB specification limits the length of a cable between full speed devices to 5 meters (a little under 16 feet 5 inches). For a low speed device the limit is 3 meters (9 feet 10 inches). So the longest distance is 30 meters using five hubs and six 5 meter USB cables between the host and the device. There are devices that extend the range of the bus, however these are not recommended and they do not follow the USB specification.
