It’s always recommended to use Active Probes rather than passive probes.

 

 Active probes:

• High impedance (<2pF typical), high bandwidth

• Prevents unwanted loading on signal

• Requires short GND wire for best performance

• Used for AC parameters, probing devices In-system

• Usually 10:1 signal attenuation

 

Passive probes:

• More impedance than active (6-9pF typical)

• Causes additional loading

• Used for measuring timing parameters, frequency, measurements not affected by loading

• Usually 10:1 signal attenuation
