Hi,

is it possible to send private message to other community members? It would be nice to have this feature.

Regards,

Ralf

IMHO are private messages in a forum like the CDC hindering the spreading of knowledge (I already made this experience at a similar place). Essential information can be hidden from other forum members, requests to "please help me out of that" up to "I need that for my exam, but my prof should not know" popping up and a certain amount of "Please, Bob gimme your email" (which I do not hide too deeply) takes my time to answer. I made the experience that those members that could not post their projects due to NDAs very often found help when they started to shrink down their project to the core uf the "Bug". Often they found the cause themselves. Thanks for al those who did not stop posting but supplied the solution they've found to the forum. What would have happened when private messages were used...? I don't know, but would it have been better with those?

Angela, thank you for clarifying.

Bob, I totally agree with your points. Regarding spreading of knowledge, etc. there's no way outside of the forum. I also refuse to give my email address, and I also had some cases with exam and prof, etc. In all cases I was able to point the people to self solution or non-NDA bug descriptions.

My question was related to the point not mentioned by you: working on similar projects and combining the workforce - this is something which is not directly covered by forums. Usually, the forum is used for problem solutions or showing the (working) product.

But, for example, if I see someone's working on a similar project or I have some questions about it (and not about the bug mentioned in the forum), I have no other way than capturing the forum thread to get in contact, and if I want to keep connection by email, I have to show my email address to the whole forum. This is usually nothing anyone of us wants.

A private messaging system doesn't need the email address, and on a good message system, I can maintain a 'ignore list' for those 'exam & prof' guys...

Regards,

Ralf
