Learn how PSoC (Programmable System on Chip) Can Enhance Engineering Education
PSoC is a device consisting of programmable analog modules, programmable digital modules and an MCU (ARM Cortex M3 or 8051) all on one piece of silicon. Coupled with the PSoC Creator IDE, PSoC enables the hands on teaching of many classes from fundamentals of digital and analog to embedded systems and beyond using one technology and one software platform. Students learn the device architecture and design flow once and can spend most of their time building projects. To learn more about this exciting technology visit www.cypress.com/go/psoc.

This is an intiative co-sponsored by Dartmouth College and The University of New Hampshire to fund start-up companies that have products that will lower power consumption, pollution and so on. One of the products is a smart meter to gauge the amount of fuel oil in a customer's tank. Currently the oil company must make about 20 trips to a customer a year to make sure they do not run out of heating oil. With these smart meters installed, this will reduce the number of yearly trips to 7 - clearly a more efficient proposition for the oil company, the highways and the customer.

From Aggie to Aggie http://www.cypress.com/?rID=46935 It has been a busy week starting Thursday Nov. 4th when I held a PSoC 5 workshop at San Jose State University for the student chapter of IEEE and robotics teams. On Friday, I was in Davis, CA at UC Davis (whose nickname is the Aggies) where I had meetings and presented two more PSoC 5 workshops as well as a quick tour of the winery where PSoC and CyFi are being used to automate and collect data during the fermentation process. At both universities many of the students commented on how much easier PSoC Creator is to use than some of the other design programs they have been working with.

As I write this I am on my way to Texas A&M (also nicknamed the Aggies) at College Station, to meet with professors and students and present the PSoC 5 story. Students at A&M have been using PSoC 1 for almost 4 years and they have been using CyFi as well as PSoC 3 in their projects.

Vital Electronics http://www.cypress.com/?rID=46107 A few months ago I asked if you knew what the Term "Vital Electronics" means.

Vital Electronics is the study and use of electrical components, circuits, networks, and systems
to achieve a design goal of protecting, saving, and improving critical infrastructure and hence the
quality of life. Vital electronics domain is a heterogeneous computing environment derived from
sensors, and actuators, networks, embedded systems, and ambient intelligence with intelligent,
robust, and trustworthy nodes capable of building Application-Centric Embedded Computers
from “off-the-shelf,” dynamically configurable virtual computational and networking parts.

And I have put my money where my mouth is by signing up for ECE994 at University of New Hampshire.

It is a graduate level course on - you guessed it - Vital Electronics! I am taking it online trhough a UNH program called "Farview".

You can take it as well if you are interested. Details can be found below:

University of New Hampshire Offers New PSoC Class:
Vital Electronics: Networked Computing Using Programmable Systems-On-Chip

Uses PSoC as the Building Block for Next-Generation, Networked Embedded Systems

SAN JOSE, Calif., September 3, 2010 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (Nasdaq: CY) today announced that the University of New Hampshire (UNH) College of Engineering and Physical Sciences is offering a new course highlighting the PSoC® programmable system-on-chip. The course, open to interested students and the community at large (for continuing education credits) is part of Far View Distance Learning Program at UNH, allowing students to take the course remotely. More information and registration for the course is available at
http://e-learn.unh.edu/coursesF10.html.

The course is entitled: ECE 994 - Vital Electronics: Networked Computing Using Programmable Systems-On-Chip. It is offered on Tuesday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Eastern time. It will use PSOC as the building block for the next generation networked embedded systems, focusing on sensing, controlling, and communicating challenges, as well as innovation, economics, validation, robustness, and the application domain. It will also use case studies, including sensorized laboratories; critical infrastructure monitoring and protection and global design methodology for in-situ hardware development.

“We’re pleased to offer this important course to our students and interested community members,” said Professor Andrzej Rucinski, the course architect and instructor. “I believe the principles covered in this course are essential to those involved in designing next-generation embedded systems. The PSoC architecture is a perfect platform for this subject matter.”

“We’re pleased to see more and more prestigious universities around the world adopt PSoC as an integral part of their curricula,” said Patrick Kane, Cypress’s director of University Relations. “Professor Rucinski has developed a course that will be of great benefit to both current students and to practicing engineers who want to stay ahead of the curve in embedded design.”

Texas A&M 9/15:

Lots of travel this week. It begins in College Station Texas home of the Aggies! They are the first university to hear about PSoC3/5 the day after it has been announced! TAMU engineering have a multitude of projects in the wings that can take advantage of the “no excuses analog” and digital functionality of the new generation of PSoC that includes 8051 and ARM Cortex M3 technology.

 Houston 9/17:

Spent time at the University of Houston college of technology this week where I was happy to instruct 34 professors, TAs and students in the fundamentals of PSoC and CyFi. UH will be integrated PSoC and CyFi technology into their curriculum over the next several semesters. The profs. were especially interested in the 8051 based PSoC 3 and will be replacing the current 8051 classes with PSoC3 technology.

I was at Drexel on Friday. With Help from John Wisniewski (Cypress FAE) and Jude Brown (Cypress Sales) I was able to show the benefits of PSoC and CyFi to professors from Drexel’s ECE, Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering colleges. Prof. Prawat Nagvajara (the one and only member of Thailand's Olympic cross coutnry ski team!) came up with a unique idea for the PSoC3 First Touch Kit (FTK). I won’t say more except it involves a rocket, the accelerometer on the board and terminal velocity. Hopefully Prawat will send us some pictures of PSoC in flight!

For those of you who do not know the story, the battle of the Alamo started the process of liberating Texas from Mexico in March 1836 The Texans lost that battle but ultimately triumphed over the forces of Generalissimo Santa Ana. The Alamo is the most visited tourist site in all of Texas.
