Stepper Motor Driver for Smart Gauges http://www.cypress.com/?rID=44 The world is digital nowadays, and most information is represented in numbers. However, human nature is more "analog" and is better represented the old-fashion way, using pointer gauges and bar graphs.

Pointer gauges can be found in various industrial applications. Automobiles, trains, and even modern aircraft dashboards emulate analog gauge functionality on flat panel plasma controls or TFT screens. It looks like good old pointer gauges won’t be disappearing soon.

Various techniques can be used to control pointer gauges. The most popular technique is to use a mechanical system, which consists of a turning coil mounted outside a two-pole permanent magnet. The applied DC current causes a magnetic force that rotates the coil and associated gauge pointer. Springs limit the coil rotation angle and the stable pointer rotation angle is in direct proportion to the coil current. Such a gauge can be equipped with an oil damper to suppress oscillations during coil angle setup and improve the system’s mechanical stability with respect to vibration. This method has limitations in the operational temperature range because oil viscosity changes with temperature, causing the gauge to be unstable amid vibrations.

Other gauges use a bimetallic plate with a heater. This type consumes considerable current during operation and readings are dependent on environmental temperature.

An alternative approach uses two quadrature-located coils to set the pointer position. In this system, the pointer rotation angle is determined in relation to the coil currents. A mechanical damper is still required to prevent pointer flicker due to mechanical vibrations at setup time.

A perfect way to control a pointer gauge is to use a small stepper motor specially designed for pointer control. Today, many companies provide stepper motors for gauges. Brands include Fraen, Paragon, Siemens, Sonceboz, Switec, TDK and Wellgain.

These motors are characterized by small size (about 1” in diameter, 0.3” in height), low power, and favorable cost, can be driven directly by the microcontroller due to low operation current (15-25mA per coil). Gauge motors have built-in gearboxes, which increase motor torque and reduce the mechanical step, providing smooth pointer rotation for large pointers. Next figure shows photos and internal construction elements of motors from several different companies.

As can easily be seen from this photo, the motor consists of two coils, a metal stator, a small permanent magnet rotor and plastic gearbox. Some motors have internal stop, which limits the pointer potation angle; others use external stop. Motors from different vendors have different stator construction, rotor diameters and gearbox ratios.

Motor driving principles

The gauge motors are stepper motors which operate in microstep mode. These motors need two phase-shifted analog signals. Many motors are driven by quadrature, 90*-phase-shifted harmonic signals, but alternative phase shift values (60*, 101*, etc) and non-harmonic waveforms are encountered as well. These signals can be formed by double PWM or DAC using lookup tables.

However, we should determine the driving speed profiles as well. There are several possible strategies for motor speed control, using either constant or variable speed operation. The motor datasheet provides several useful graphs for starting and operating torque vs. control-signal frequency (see example on Figure 2). As can be seen easily from these graphs, the maximum start-up frequency is much less than the maximum operation frequency. Therefore, the constant speed profile does not provide minimum pointer setup time. The variable speed driving profile is free from this limitation, allowing the use of all available motor capabilities and the attainment of minimal pointer setup time.

The stepper motor is a synchronous electric machine and the angle of the rotor can be uniquely determined by the relation of phase currents. Due to the inherent limitation in the coil driving force, the acceleration/deceleration value should be limited to avoid causing the indicator to skip a step.

In the stepper motor gauge design, it is possible to select different motor acceleration and deceleration schemes.

One scheme can use a constant acceleration profile. This type of profile is useful when the rotation speed is increased at constant acceleration during the acceleration phase, with a corresponding deceleration during the deceleration phase. The rotational speed is constant when the speed reaches a predefined threshold. This driving profile is sometimes called a trapezoidal profile, since the speed profile assumes the shape of a trapezoid. This profile assures minimum pointer setup time.

Another possible solution uses a digital compensator to gradually increase the rotational speed during the motor acceleration phase and to smoothly decrease the speed during the deceleration phase. When this scheme is used, the absolute value of the acceleration must also be within the allowed bounds of the motor. You can obtain more information about stepper motor control from AN2229 “Multi-Functional Stepping Motor Driver” Application Note.

This driver can be implemented with a microcontroller and some application requirements. The following modules are necessary:

  • A double-PWM or DAC to form the coil currents;
  • A variable frequency generator to generate the updating events for the coils’ current values to determine the rotational speed;
  • A speed control subsystem to provide rotational acceleration and deceleration stages.

Modern microcontrollers have PWMs and some have build in DACs to allow formation of variable coil current. The programmable interval timer can be used as a variable frequency generator for rotation speed control. However, the change in linear motor rotation speed corresponds to a hyperbolic timer period curve, which requires a higher-resolution timer.

PSoC provides an alternative solution due to its flexible internal analog user modules. The voltage-to-frequency converter (V/F), coupled with DAC, creates a programmable, variable frequency signal generator with a constant frequency step. This is the method is used in this Application Note. The released digital blocks can be used for other purposes, running the communication interface for example or as PWM sources.

In some applications, gauges are used as standalone devices, handling analog or digital input signals directly. Other applications require networked gauges, which are controlled by a central processor using a chosen bus (CAN, LIN, J1587, and others).

For detail information about methods of Gauge Motors control refer to Application Note: AN2197

All these projects have prototypes and were tested as well. Some pictures of completed prototypes are shown below:

There are LED packages available with multiple colored LEDs on the same die, allowing for MR-16 lamps capable of tunable white light or color light applications. Tunable white light systems allow the user to set the desired color temperature of white light, which can be very useful in retail lighting applications. These systems require an intelligent LED driver that provide the constant current power supply for the high brightness LEDs, modulate the intensity for color tuning and also provide a communication interface for control (such as DMX-512)

Figure 1. MR-16 Lamp & Fixture Internals

Cypress has developed a reference design for a compact LED driver solution, made to fit inside the MR-16 fixture, as shown in the figure above. The solution includes support for up to four channels of LEDs, such as in tunable white light systems. The driver board uses PowerPSoC for providing a constant current power supply for the LEDs and integrated intelligence for multi-channel LED control. The solution also integrates DMX512 communication, which provides flexibility to network multiple fixtures but maintaining individual control for each fixture.

The following table lists the specifications of the four-channel PowerPSoC solution. Figure 2 below shows pictures of the reference design board.

Arithmetic Libraries User Guide http://www.cypress.com/?rID=52467 Fri, 24 Jun 2011 04:20:19 -0600 MPPT Based Solar Charge Controller Reference Design http://www.cypress.com/?rID=39236 Solar panels are being increasingly used in street lighting applications to make for environment friendly designs by reducing the dependency on conventional energy. The use of High Brightness LEDs (HB-LEDs) for illumination in streetlights further increases their energy efficiency. Figure 1 shows a picture of a solar panel powered street light with high brightness LEDs. These systems employ lead acid batteries that get charged by solar panels during the day. The energy from the batteries is then used to drive the LEDs in the night.

Figure 1. Solar powered street light

Solar panels consist of photovoltaic cells that use light energy from the sun to generate electricity through photovoltaic effect. Maximum Power Point Tracking, referred to as MPPT, is an electronic system that operates the photovoltaic modules in solar panels to produce maximum power. MPPT varies the electrical operating point of the modules and enables them to deliver maximum available power. MPPT can be used in conjunction with a mechanical tracking system, but the two systems are completely different.

Cypress’ MPPT Solar Charge Controller is a battery charger and load controller with integrated LED driver, which features a smart tracking algorithm that maximizes energy harvest from solar panels. It is designed using Cypress’ PowerPSoC and uses the device’s integrated hysteretic controllers, its dedicated modulators, and PSoC core to implement the MPPT smart tracking algorithm, as well as the constant current LED driver circuit.

Table 1 below shows the specifications of the MPPT Solar Charge Controller Reference Design:

Cypress Solution CY8CLED04D01 PowerPSoC
Features

MPPT Algorithm for optimized battery charging,

Buck and boost driver for LED applications

Input

Solar panel open circuit voltage – 21 V

Short circuit current – 7 A

Battery Rating

12 V Lead acid

Maximum charging current – 9.5 A

Boost Driver Rating

Voltage – 40 V,

Current – 1 A

Floating Load Buck Driver Rating

Voltage – 8 V,

Current – 1 A

The block diagram of the integrated solar charger and LED driver is shown in Figure 2. Power delivered by the solar panel is converted to a voltage level that can drive charging current into the battery. PowerPSoC generates the necessary control signal to drive a synchronous buck converter that converts the solar panel power to charge the battery. The MPPT algorithm embedded in the PowerPSoC takes voltage and current feedback from the panel and adjusts the control signals to operate the panel at its peak power. The PowerPSoC also monitors the battery charging process and provides status information based on battery condition and load switch status.

The application described below also integrates two channels of LED drivers. The first channel is configured in a floating load buck topology rated at 8V, 1A. The second channel is configured in a boost topology rated at 40V, 1A. The user can select between these two LED driver channels to drive LEDs with power from the batteries. The firmware in the attached code example is designed to operate one LED driver channel at a time. The solar charge controller also has board-level protection features that protect the board from battery short circuits, battery open, and battery/panel reverse connections.

PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 LCD Drive Solutions http://www.cypress.com/?rID=37989 OVERVIEW

LCD Drive is a new feature being introduced with the PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 families. Whereas PSoC 1 devices could only control (or within limited parameters drive) an LCD and thus required an external driver chip, PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 devices can drive an LCD without an external MCU. PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 devices provide single-chip solutions that contain superior and flexible LCD drivers with integrated analog capability.

With PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 LCD Drive Solutions, you can:

Drive Up to 16 Commons

  • Drive complex displays without an external driver
  • Drive simple displays with fewer pins
    • More pins for peripheral integration

Use PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 Internal Voltage Generator

  • No need for external resistors or capacitors
  • Drive LCDs anywhere in industry-leading 0.5V-5.5V range

Configure LCD Pin Locations

  • Shorter traces
  • Fewer PCB layers

Implement High Level APIs

  • Less application code

Easily Debug your Application

  • LCD active in debug

Drive Multiple LCDs with one PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 Device

  • Plenty of commons, segments, and I/Os to drive multiple displays
  • Add more product functionality; reduce even more BOM

Configure your LCD with PSoC Creator Software’s Simple GUI

  • No setup coding required

Drive vs. Control

Control of an LCD is different than driving an LCD because driving requires specific waveforms. Since PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 devices can create these waveforms using an analog multiplexer, they can now drive LCDs standalone.

This new LCD drive feature makes PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 devices a good fit for applications requiring an LCD because PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 devices now integrate what was a two-chip solution onto a single chip. This means lower BOM costs and higher peripheral integration for the customer.

CY8CLEDAC02 - 8 W Low Line Dimmable LED Driver Reference Design Guide http://www.cypress.com/?rID=47589
This document describes a low-line 8 W dimmable LED driver reference design using the CY8CLEDAC02 AC-DC power controller device. This design is capable of driving five white LEDs with a typical load voltage of 16.5 V at 400 mA.

The CY8CLEDAC02 is a high performance offline LED driver, designed to interface directly with most conventional phase-cut based wall dimmers. The device uses proprietary digital control technology to provide automatic detection of dimmer type (leading- or trailing-edge). It automatically generates dimming signals for LED loads and has the ability to dim down to 2 percent. It modulates LED brightness using a linear dimming scheme and switches to a PWM based dimming scheme for output current levels lower than 20 percent of the full load current. In PWM mode, optimized dimming frequencies in the range of 900 Hz result in zero visible flicker.

Capsense Multimedia Board http://www.cypress.com/?rID=26 In the consumer electronics world, “cool” design is an important factor in a product’s success. PSoC Capsense allows for “cool” designs by replacing mechanical buttons with a sleeker, more refined interface. One application for PSoC Capsense that is rapidly growing is multimedia boards for laptops.

The majority of today’s laptops include multimedia capabilities. Access to these functions as well as general-purpose functions are often located on a multimedia strip near the laptop’s keyboard.

With PSoC’s capacitive sensing technologies, these functions can be implemented without mechanical buttons resulting in a sleeker look. This element describes a reference design for a PSoC Capsense multimedia board.

Proximity Detection in the Presence of Metal Objects http://www.cypress.com/?rID=62 This application note describes implementing proximity detection in the presence of large metal objects. Recommendations about sensor mechanical construction and proximity sensing best practices are provided. An example of proximity sensing implementation for microwave ovens is also provided.

The ability to use proximity detection in white goods and automotive applications is often essential. For example, proximity detector is used to turn on the backlight in a kitchen stove or the internal lamp in a microwave oven when the palm is close to the door. In various home appliances a proximity sensor turns on the display when the user tries to adjust some parameters. Cypress provides a CY3235 kit that demonstrates proximity sensing. The CY3235 kit has a detection range of 30 cm when the sensor is located far away from conductive objects such as metals. When a wire sensor is placed on a metal surface, detection range dramatically decreases from 30 cm to 2 cm. Most white good and automotive applications have a metal frame or case that is a challenge for proximity sensing devices.

This CY3235 kit contains a wired sensor and small PCB with CY8C21434 chip on board, as shown in Figure 1. The reasons why the proximity detection range reduces dramatically when conductive objects are placed close to the sensor are:

  • The sensor stray capacitance increases. Stray capacitance reduces the proximity response value by providing a higher full scale range. Larger stray capacitance often requires operation frequency reduction, causing the additional detection distance to decrease.
  • A grounded metal plane catches a part of the sensor electric field and reduces the added by palm capacitance.
