Development Kits (DVKs)

Development Kits (DVKs) provide a common development platform where you can prototype and evaluate different PSoC 1 devices.

CY3210-PSoCEval1 Evaluation Kit

This kit supports all PSoC Mixed-Signal Array families, including automotive. The evaluation board includes an LCD module, Potentiometer, LEDs, and bread boarding space.

  CY3214-PSoCEvalUSB PSoC CapSensePLUS with USB Evaluation Kit

This Kit features a development board for the CY8C24x94 PSoC device. Special features of the board include both USB and capacitive touch sense development and debugging support.

Evaluation Kits (EVKs)

Evaluation Kits (EVKs) enable demonstration of real life system applications, but without the flexibility of prototyping and debugging.

CY3236A-PIRMOTION - Pyroelectric Infrared (PIR) Motion Detection Kit

The CY3236A-PIRMOTION EVK allows you to evaluate Cypress' PSoC device's ability to control a PIR sensor to  implement motion sensing applications such as automatic lighting controls, automatic door openers, security systems, kiosk wakeup and activating wireless cameras.

  CY3270 PSoC FirstTouch Starter Kit

The CY3270 PSoC FirstTouch Starter Kit provides a quick, easy, and affordable way to evaluate the integration, flexibility and real mixed-signal programmability of PSoC programmable system-on-chips.

Debugger

The PSoC 1 debugger serves as a device programmer via In-System Serial Programming (ISSP) and supports in-circuit emulation that allows the user to run, halt and single step the processor. Emulation Kits might be required when using the debugger.

CY3215-DK In-Circuit Emulation Development Kit

The PSoC Development Kit includes an InCircuit Emulator (ICE) which consists of a base unit, USB 2.0 cable, and power supply. The base unit is connected to the host PC via the USB port.

   
Emulation Kit (POD)

Emulation Pods provide interconnection between the debugger and the target PSoC 1 device in a prototype system or a PCB (via package-specific POD Feet). They plug into (or are soldered onto) the user's circuit board to provide the physical interface. Use the Kit Selector Guide to pin point Emulation Kit and POD Feet for your PSoC 1 device.

There are 2 types of PODs

3210 POD

The 3210 POD has a 28-pin DIP footprint on the bottom for easy connection to development kits or other hardware. The top of the POD has prototyping headers for easy connection to the devices pins.

  3250 POD

The 3250 POD along with the feet allows you to do on board debugging of the target (customer) board and allows on chip debug (OCD) parts to translate in to any pin package.

They plug into (or are soldered onto) the user's circuit board to provide the physical interface.POD feet are sold separately

 
Programmer

This kit will provide the user with a programming tool that can be used to program all PSoC1 devices, except the CY25/26xxx devices. This tool is packaged along with DVK.

CY3217-MiniProg1

The CY3217 is the base Miniprog1 kit. This kit will provide the user with a programming tool that can be used to program all PSoC1 devices.

The Miniprog3 supports the following protocols:

  • SWD
  • JTAG

Included with the kit is a 10-pin ribbon cable for connecting to standard 10-pin JTAG header interfaces utilized for our PSoC 3 and PSoC 5 architectures while the device itself supports the 5-pin ISSP programming header for PSoC 1 architectures. The 5-pin connector also supports the USB-I2C Bridging capabilities and is a superset of the CY3240 capabilities. Please note, the CY8CKIT-002 only contains the Miniprog3 and supporting cables.

Miniprog3 *B Revision Update:

Cypress Semiconductor has completed a hardware update to the Miniprog3 to address hardware issues seen with programming, ESD, and power management. The Miniprog3 revision, either *A or *B, is indicated using sticker on the back of the programmer. The following are a list of updates made to the Miniprog3 *B programmer.

Updated Hardware to Improve Power Cycle Programming:

The Miniprog3 hardware has been updated to better improve power cycle programming for all PSoC devices. It was discovered that the Miniprog3 *A programmer revision did not correctly implement the power cycle programming methodology. Due to this issue the Miniprog3 *A programmer could not correctly support power cycle programming for PSoC 3 and PSoC 5 devices. This specifically impacts customers who do not route out the XRES line to the programming connector or disable the optional XRES line on certain devices. The *B revision of the Miniprog3 will support power cycle programming for all PSoC 3 and PSoC 5 devices.

Over-current and Non-Polarized Connection Updates:

There are known electrical risks to the Miniprog3 *A revision that have been addressed with the *B update. To address the electrical issues the Miniprog3 *B programmer has added ESD over-current protection to the USB lines and has added electrical protection to the 5 and 10-pin connectors in case of a reverse polarity condition.

Improved Voltage Detection Capabilities:

The Miniprog3 *B programmer has been updated to improve the voltage detection capabilities. The Miniprog3 will measure the target voltage within an accuracy of 20 mV for a range of 1.8V – 5.0V.

The CY3672-USB programming kit enables any user with a PC to quickly and easily program Field-programmable Clock Gener­ators. Set-up requires a power connection and either a parallel port or USB port (CY3672-USB) connection directly to the PC.

Using CyClocksRT™ (embedded in CyberClocks software) or CyberClocks Online, users can configure their parts to a given specification and generate the corresponding JEDEC file. In addition, CyClocksRT software provides PPM optimization and power calculations.

The JEDEC file is then loaded into CY3672 software that communicates with the programmer. The CY3672 software has the ability to read and view the EPROM table from a programmed device.

CY3672-USB is the programming base unit only that does not include any socket adapter. Based on the part number that needs to be programmed, the respective socket adapter has to be ordered and purchased separately.

General PSoC® Programming http://www.cypress.com/?rID=2543 Introduction:

The General PSoC Programming web page is central location that details all aspects of programming related to all available PSoC devices. The following sections will detail the available software, hardware, documentation, and 3rd party vendor relationships available to PSoC customers.

Software:

The PSoC Programmer software tool supports all Cypress PSoC programming hardware and PSoC devices. PSoC Programmer is a simple GUI that connects to programming hardware to program and configure PSoC devices. The image below is a screenshot of the Programmer GUI. From the GUI users will be able to select their target device, configure programming selections and execute a number of programming actions such as Program, Read, Verify and Erase.

PSoC Programmer is a required installation for both PSoC Creator and PSoC Designer. Both development IDE’s utilize PSoC Programmer for the hardware access layer it delivers (Programmer COM). The Programmer COM supports programming and debugging for PSoC devices. This Programmer COM is not restricted to just the development environments, but is also available to all users to develop custom applications utilizing the Cypress programming and debugging hardware. This hardware is described below.

Programming Modes, Protocols, and Schematics:

When programming any PSoC device there is at least one Host Programmer and the target PSoC. The Host programmer can be one of the following, a Cypress Programmer (ex. Miniprog3), a Host processor or FPGA performing HSSP programming (Host Side Serial Programming), or a 3rd party programmer. When interfacing with the target device there are two modes to program the device, Reset and Power Cycle programming.

Reset (XRES) Programming means that the target PSoC is powered by some external power supply or from the programmer, such as a Miniprog3, and is acquired using the XRES pin.

Power Cycle Programming means that there is an external power supply (often controlled by the programmer) that cycles power on the device. The voltage level is measured by the programmer and when the voltage value crosses a specific value the programmer begins to initiate the programming sequence and acquire the chip. The acquire window for Power Cycle methods are often smaller than with XRES programming. Due to this narrow window it is often preferred to use XRES programming.

Various PSoC devices support different programming protocols. The following table details the PSoC devices and the support protocols:

PSoC Engineering Programmers:
 
As referenced above in the PSoC Programmer software section Cypress also supports proprietary programming and debugging hardware for all PSoC Devices. The functionality of this hardware ranges from simply programming functions to debugging and I2C-USB bridging. All of the hardware listed below is supported by PSoC Programmer. All hardware drivers are signed and supported on all XP, Vista and Windows 7 systems.

The Cypress engineering programmers are not recommended for mass production programming environments due to their mechanical design, plastic enclosures, and plastic headers. The Miniprog3 provides over current protection and over voltage protections, but due to the manufacturing environments customers may subject the engineering programmers to damaging conditions. PSoC Programmer also supports the Generic USB programmer. This programmer is shipped on PSoC 3 and PSoC 5 development kits and connects directly to the USB port and will be recognized and supported by PSoC Programmer.

JTAG and Boundary Scan

The PSoC 3 device family supports JTAG device programming and Boundary Scan Testing as part of the IEEE1149.1 standard. Cypress will be expanding our 3rd party ecosystem by engaging with 3rd party JTAG vendors to enable support for the PSoC 3 JTAG programming sequence.

The PSoC 3 programming algorithm does not support generalized JTAG programming languages such as SVF, STAPL, and others. To program the PSoC 3 devices the user must use the Miniprog3 and PSoC Programmer or a qualified third party vendor.

For all Boundary Scan testing the PSoC 3 device will work with any standard JTAG boundary scan development tool. All PSoC 3 devices are preconfigured from Cypress as 4-wire JTAG devices. PSoC Programming Specifications:

Cypress provides programming specific documentation to users who wish to develop a custom programmer or those who wish to implement a host side serial programming (HSSP) protocol. Some customers wish to implement the cypress programming support on their host programmer in order to reprogram the PSoC in system. Kit Classification

Cypress offers a wide range of kits to help you develop with Cypress parts. The ultimate goal is to get you to market faster - with minimum risk - by reducing learning and development time. Cypress USB and Wireless/RF kits fall into one of the following categories:

Development Kits (DVKs)

Development Kits are designed for the engineer who has a more serious task. DVKs are used by designers to prototype their solution. There will typically be more pin headers, multiple power-supplies/voltage levels, a breadboard/prototyping area, connectors for expansion boards, and a multitude of more complex code examples.

First Touch Kits (FTKs)

First Touch Kits are designed to have enough functionality to give first time users experience with a Cypress part and development environment. The kits are low-cost, come with a variety of sample projects, and are fun. First Touch kits are also known as “Starter Kits”.

Reference Design Kits (RDKs)

Reference Design Kits are designed as an example of an end product where a Cypress part is used. These kits enable customers to minimize their product development cycle time by re-using the RDK’s design (board design, firmware & software).

Programmers

This kit will provide the user with a programming tool that can be used to program all enCoRe devices. This tool is packaged along with DVK.

Debugger

The debugger serves as a device programmer via In-System Serial Programming (ISSP) and supports in-circuit emulation that allows the user to run, halt and single step the processor. Emulation Kits might be required when using the debugger.

Emulation Kit (POD)

Emulation Pods provide interconnection between the debugger and the target device in a prototype system or a PCB (via package-specific POD Feet). They plug into (or are soldered onto) the user's circuit board to provide the physical interface.

CY8CKIT-050 PSoC® 5LP Development Kit http://www.cypress.com/?rID=51577 The CY8CKIT-050 PSoC® 5LP Development Kit enables you to evaluate, develop and prototype high precision analog, low-power and low-voltage applications powered by Cypress’s CY8C58LP high precision analog device family.

Additionally, this kit supports the PSoC Expansion Board Kit ecosystem as a compatible host platform. This kit is designed specifically for PSoC 5LP development, the PSoC 3 version of the same kit can be purchased from www.cypress.com/go/cy8ckit-030.

This kit is designed for analog performance. The kit features a very low noise floor. Care has been taken to separate the analog and the digital domain. Separate regulators are also available and separate ground planes are provided. We have achieved ENOB very close to 20 bits with this kit. Provisions are provided to add an external precision voltage reference, if needed.

Besides the analog, this kit is also meant to demonstrate the low power operation of PSoC 5LP. The PSoC 5LP chip is soldered to the board, this significantly reduces the leakage currents compared to the CY8CKIT-001. Special terminals are provided to enable the boost converter operation without requiring many modifications. Jumpers have been provided to remove power to RS232 converter, potentiometer, to have a single regulator for analog and digital domain, and evaluate the low power operation of PSoC 5LP.

It features an onboard programmer (Cypress USB chip based), which allows you to program the PSoC 3/PSoC 5LP without connecting to Miniprog3, however, provisions have been provided to program using Miniprog3 as well.

CY3215-DK In-Circuit Emulation Development Kit http://www.cypress.com/?rID=3411

The PSoC 1 Debugger includes an In-Circuit Emulator (ICE) which consists of a base unit, USB 2.0 cable, and power supply. The base unit is connected to the host PC via the USB port. The ICE is driven by the Debugger subsystem of PSoC Designer. This software interface allows the user to run, halt, and single step the processor. It also allows the user to set complex event points. Event points can start and stop the trace memory on the ICE, as well as break the program execution. In addition to the Development Kit, different Emulation Pods are available to support the range of devices in the PSoC family. They plug into (or are soldered onto) the user's circuit board to provide the physical interface. Pods are available for low-cost expansion of the ICE-Cube capability.

The ICE-Cube also serves as a single-site device programmer via an ISSP (In-System Serial Programming) Cable and MiniEval board included in the kit. The MiniEval board is a programming and evaluation board which connects to the ICE-Cube via an ISSP Cable and allows programming of DIP devices. There are also other Programming boards available for programming other packages. The MiniEval also includes LEDs and a POT for simple evaluation and demonstration.

CY8CKIT-030 PSoC® 3 Development Kit http://www.cypress.com/?rID=49524 Additionally, this kit supports the PSOC Expansion Board Kit ecosystem as a compatible host platform. This kit is for PSoC 3 development specifically, and the PSoC 5 version of the same kit can be purchased from www.cypress.com/go/cy8ckit-050.

This kit is specifically designed for analog performance. The noise floor on these kits is very low. Care has been taken to separate the analog and the digital domain, separate regulators are also available. Separate ground planes are provided. We have achieved ENOB very close to 20 bits on this kit. Provision has been provided to add an external precision voltage reference if needed.

Besides the analog, this kit is also meant to demonstrate the low power operation of PSoC3/PSoC5. PSoC3 chip is soldered to the board, this way the leakage currents are reduced significantly compared to the CY8CKIT-001. Special terminals are provided to enable the boost converter operation without much modifications. Jumpers have been provided to remove power to RS232 converter, Potentiometer and to have a single regulator for Analog and digital domain and evaluate the low power operation of PSoC3.

It has got an onboard programmer(Cypress USB chip based), which lets you program PSoC3/PSoC5 without connecting Miniprog3. Provision has been provided to program using Miniprog3 as well.

The CY8CKIT-001 PSoC 1 Development Kit allows you to evaluate Cypress's PSoC 1, PSoC 3 and PSoC 5 families. The modular design allows you to interface with different types of Expansion Board Kits. In this case the CY8CKIT-036 plugs onto the CY8CKIT-001, which uses the firmware example project of the CY8CKIT-016 to demonstrate Thermal Management functions.

Example Project Description

Example firmware provides a quick demonstration of a two-zone Thermal Management system. Zone 1 consists of a 4-wire fan, the I2C temperature sensor and a potentiometer that simulates a diode. Zone 2 consists of the other 4-wire fan, a PWM output temperature sensor and a 1-wire temperature sensor. Fan RPM is controlled based on the weighted average readings of temperature sensors in their zones. Fan RPM zone temperature readings and fan faults are displayed in LCD.
 


PSoC One-chip Solution
 

This Thermal Management solution is used by Tier 1 Customers in Data and Telecom equipment. It can be your solution as well. Options include:

  1. Driving up to 8 fans in closed-loop or open-loop
  2. Interfacing with Multiple Digital and Analog Sensors
  3. Communicating via I2C, SPI, UART or PMBus* and SMBus*

*SMBus and *PMBus with PSoC 1 are under development

Overview:

The PSoC Development Kit includes an In-Circuit Emulator (ICE) which consists of a base unit, USB 2.0 cable, and power supply. The base unit is connected to the host PC via the USB port. The ICE is driven by the Debugger subsystem of PSoC Designer. This software interface allows the user to run, halt, and single step the processor. It also allows the user to set complex event points. Event points can start and stop the trace memory on the ICE, as well as break the program execution. In addition to the Development Kit, different Emulation Pods are available to support the range of devices in the PSoC family. They plug into (or are soldered onto) the user's circuit board to provide the physical interface. Pods are available for low-cost expansion of the ICE-Cube capability.

The ICE-Cube also serves as a single-site device programmer via an ISSP (In-System Serial Programming) Cable and MiniEval board included in the kit. The MiniEval board is a programming and evaluation board which connects to the ICE-Cube via an ISSP Cable and allows programming of DIP devices. There are also other Programming boards available for programming other packages. The MiniEval also includes LEDs and a POT for simple evaluation and demonstration.

The CY3672 programming kit enables any user with a PC to quickly and easily program Field-programmable Clock Gener­ators. The only set-up requirements are a power connection and USB port (CY3672-USB) connection with the PC.

Using CyClocksRT(TM) (embedded in CyberClocks software) or CyberClocks Online, users can configure their parts to a given specification and generate the corresponding JEDEC file. In addition, CyClocksRT software provides PPM optimization and power calculations.

The JEDEC file is then loaded into CY3672 software that communicates with the programmer. The CY3672 software has the ability to read and view the EPROM table from a programmed device.
