PSoC 3 CapSense Plus Solution Reduces Components and Saves Engineering Time

SAN JOSE, Calif., October 13, 2011 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (Nasdaq: CY) the market leader in touch-sensing, today introduced the PSoC® 3 CapSense® Plus capacitive touch-sensing solution for buttons, sliders, touchpads, and proximity sensing. It’s the industry’s best capacitive-sensing solution that can also perform general system control functions. To accomplish this task, the new product combines two premier Cypress product offerings, the PSoC 3 programmable system-on-chip and the industry-leading CapSense capacitive touch control technology.

PSoC 3 CapSense Plus lowers system design cost and eases the design process with Cypress’s revolutionary, patent-pending SmartSense™ auto-tuning algorithm, which eliminates the requirement for system tuning. SmartSense enables automatic tuning of more than 10 parameters to achieve optimal touch sensing performance. The graphical CapSense software module in Cypress’s PSoC Creator™ IDE makes it easy for designers to define combinations of buttons, sliders, touch pads and proximity-sensing capacitive sensors, and offers real-time feedback of parameters such as signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), finger threshold, noise threshold, and more.

The new PSoC 3 CapSense Plus devices offer up to 62 General Purpose I/O (GPIO) pins—all of which can handle CapSense signals—enabling the industry’s largest number of capacitive sensing elements in a single chip.  In addition, the new solution provides Cypress’s legendary noise immunity that ensures robust operation in the presence of noise from a variety of sources. More information on the new solution is available at www.cypress.com/go/psocpluscapsense.

In addition, an informative web-based module entitled “Upgrade your Capacitive Touch-Sensing Designs” is available at http://www.eetimes.com/electrical-engineers/education-training/courses/4229293/Upgrade-your-Capacitive-Touch-Sensing-Designs-.

Cypress is offering the CY8CKIT-031 PSoC CapSense Expansion Board Kit to speed designs with the new solution. The CY8CKIT-031 includes both button and slider modules, three separate overlays for prototyping, and a resource CD with example projects and application notes. The new kit’s adapter board allows engineers to plug in existing CapSense modules into the CY8CKIT-001 PSoC Development Kit or the CY8CKIT-030 PSoC 3 Development Kit, giving engineers access to the complete PSoC 3 ecosystem to create powerful, customized designs, and ease customers’ ability to re-use CapSense designs within the PSoC 3 environment.  The CapSense modules kits include the CY3280-BSM Simple Button Module Kit, the CY3280-SRM Radial Slider Module Kit, the CY3280-SLM Linear Slider Module Kit, and the CY3280-BMM Matrix Button Module Kit. For customer who already have these module kits, they are eligible for a 50 percent discount when purchasing the new CY8CKIT-031kit.  Designers can get more information and order the new kit at www.cypress.com/go/cy8ckit-031.

Today, engineers design capacitive touch user interfaces separately from the central system control function. In most cases, a ribbon cable runs from the user interface controller to the system controller to convey user inputs. This design method requires multiple components, uses more power, and complicates the system design. Cypress has solved this problem with PSoC 3 CapSense Plus. Designers now have the ability to integrate both the system and user interface control in one chip, with the added benefit of SmartSense auto-tuning that speeds both system design and prototyping/production by optimizing parameters automatically during the design process.

“Designers recognize Cypress as the leader in capacitive touch solutions and also appreciate the power and flexibility of the PSoC 3 architecture,” said Gahan Richardson, vice president of PSoC platform products for Cypress. “We’ve made it easy for designers to combine these two marquis technologies to simplify the system design process in many applications.”

The Cypress PSoC 3 architecture, based on a high-performance 8-bit 8051 processor, has unique programmable analog and digital peripherals that enable capabilities such as motor control, intelligent power supply and battery management, LCD segment display, graphics control, as well as audio/voice processing, communication protocols, and much more. Its integrated 20-bit Delta Sigma ADC delivers better than 18-bit effective number of bits (ENOB) performance.

Cypress’s CapSense technology is the industry’s leading solution for capacitive buttons, sliders and switches. CapSense touch-sensing solutions have replaced 3.5 billion mechanical buttons in mobile handsets, laptops, consumer electronics, white goods, automotive applications, and virtually any system that has a mechanical button or switch, making Cypress the industry touch-sensing leader. The CapSense portfolio, the industry's broadest and most integrated, enhances industrial design and reliability with the most noise-immune and water tolerant capacitive touch-sensing interfaces, including proximity sensing where direct touch is not required. The PSoC CapSense solution also delivers benefits such as easy communications using either I2C, SPI or USB interfaces, the ability to implement both trackpad (x-y matrix) and linear slider applications with the same device, and the ability to make quick design changes using the flash-based PSoC architecture. In addition, users can complete CapSense designs quickly and easily using pre-configured and verified "user modules" within Cypress's PSoC Designer™ 4.4 Integrated Design Environment (IDE). About the PSoC Family
PSoC devices are configurable mixed signal arrays that integrate a fast 8-bit microcontroller with many peripheral functions typically found in an embedded design. PSoC devices provide the advantages of an ASIC without the ASIC NRE or turn-around time. A single PSoC device can integrate as many as 100 peripheral functions with a microcontroller, saving customers design time, board space and power consumption. Customers can save from 5 cents to as much as $10 in system costs. Easy to use development tools enable designers to select configurable library elements to provide analog functions such as amplifiers, ADCs, DACs, filters and comparators and digital functions such as timers, counters, PWMs, SPI and UARTs. The PSoC family's analog features include rail-to-rail inputs, programmable gain amplifiers and up to 14-bit ADCs with exceptionally low noise, input leakage and voltage offset.  PSoC devices include up to 32KB of Flash memory, 2KB of SRAM, an 8x8 multiplier with 32-bit accumulator, power and sleep monitoring circuits, and hardware I2C communications.

All PSoC devices are dynamically reconfigurable, enabling designers to create new system functions on-the-fly. Designers can achieve far greater than 100 percent utilization of the die, in many cases, by reconfiguring the same silicon for different functions at different times.  Learn more about PSoC products at www.cypress.com/psoc and receive free online training at www.cypress.com/psoctraining."

Cypress Wins 100th Design For PSoC® CapSense Interface http://www.cypress.com/?rID=37209 Capacitive Sensing Solution Secures Designs In Consumer, Computation, White Goods and Automotive Applications

SAN JOSE, Calif., July 19, 2006 - Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: CY) today announced that it has been awarded its 100th design win for the CapSense capacitive touch sensing interface, based on the popular PSoC® (Programmable System-on-Chip™) architecture. A single CapSense device can replace dozens of mechanical switches and controls with simple, touch-sensitive controls. CapSense-based "button" and slider controls are more reliable than their mechanical counterparts because they are not prone to the environmental wear-and-tear that affects exposed buttons and switches.

The 100 design wins have been achieved since Cypress introduced the CapSense solution in May 2005. CapSense designs have been secured across the globe in a variety of applications, including:

· Consumer segment - mobile handsets, portable media players, digital still cameras, personal GPS units, cordless phones, set-top boxes, and Digital Video Broadcast (DVB)
· Computation segment - notebook computers, peripheral devices and monitors
· White goods segment - microwave and conventional ovens, cook-tops, washing machines and air cleaners
· Automotive segment - front dashboard control

"CapSense is a high impact solution for our customers," said George Saul, vice president of Cypress's PSoC Business Unit. "Our customers report faster design cycles with fewer components, more flexibility, and market-differentiating styling options, all for an economical price."

About CapSense
Capacitive sensing is fast becoming the solution of choice for front-panel display and media control applications. Increased durability, decreased bill of materials (BOM) and a clean, minimalist appearance make this elegant interface attractive to a wide range of designs. With Cypress's CapSense capacitive touch sensor interface, a finger on the interface forms an electrical connection with embedded sensors, which work with the PSoC device to translate data about the finger's position into various system control functions.
