The new software update simplifies and accelerates designs with new PSoC Components™, enabling easy creation and distribution of custom Components, and generates custom datasheets.

PSoC Creator is more than merely an IDE. In addition to a robust compiler and programmer, it allows users to configure PSoC programmable hardware into a custom one-chip solution. It includes a rich library of over 100 pre-verified, production-ready analog and digital Components—“virtual chips,” represented by an icon—that users can drag-and-drop into a design and configure to suit a broad array of application requirements. PSoC Creator 2.2 with Component Pack 5 features seven new and five enhanced Components including MDIO Interface, SAR Sequencer and a digital Component pack with multiple Flip/Flops, a Pulse Converter and a Frequency Divider. It also offers a new PWM-based sensor interface Component that connects to Analog Devices’ TMP05 temperature sensors. PSoC Creator is a unique design software that enables engineers to design the way they think, using schematic-based design capture along with pre-verified, production-ready Components to keep system creation independent of the target PSoC device. Today, engineers design capacitive touch user interfaces separately from the central system control function. PSoC Creator 2.0 now interoperates with the popular and powerful Keil µVision® 4 integrated development environment (IDE), enabling software engineers to create PSoC applications using an industry-leading firmware development tool.  The integration of the two tools means that PSoC designs can be rapidly drawn, configured and built in PSoC Creator, and the application code built in the familiar and feature-rich µVision® 4 IDE.

The new version also adds 11 new, pre-configured peripheral components that can easily be dropped into the schematic design canvas and combined into powerful systems. Behind the scenes, Cypress has updated PSoC Creator’s design routing functionality. The tool automatically places components into the PSoC device, routes all on-chip signals and directs I/O to the optimum pins. Each peripheral component is carefully parameterized so that the implementation is automatically optimized to fit the developer’s needs perfectly with no wasted resources. The build process generates a consistently-named set of APIs for each component that allows the software developer to control the hardware without knowing the underlying register set. The billionth unit was determined to have shipped on July 19 at 11:22 AM Pacific Daylight Time. Duane Harrison of North Carolina, U.S.A., entered the closest guess for the shipment time and will receive a new NOOK™ Color eReader, which includes a PSoC-based TrueTouch® touchscreen controller.

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 19, 2010 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (Nasdaq: CY) today introduced a new family in its PSoC® 3 architecture. The family is optimized for applications requiring programmable digital peripherals. The new CY8C32xxx Programmable Digital PSoC 3 Family enables the integration of digital peripherals including PWMs, Timers, Counters, UARTs, glue logic and state machines. Additionally, the family offers customizable digital functions and interfaces lowering overall system power by migrating traditional CPU functions to programmable digital logic.

The CY8C32xxx devices address a broad range of applications including interface bridging, I/O expansion, power-up sequencing and peripheral control. These applications are common in end markets such as communications equipment, servers and motor control. The Programmable Digital Family is now sampling along with the original three PSoC 3 families: the CY8C38xxx Precision Analog Family, the CY8C36xxx Performance Analog Family and the CY8C34xxx Analog Lite Family.

The new CY8C32xxx family is powered by up to 24 Universal Digital Blocks (UDBs) each consisting of a combination of uncommitted logic (PLD), structured logic (8-bit datapath), and flexible routing to other UDBs, I/O or peripherals. The UDBs can be programmed with a large library of pre-characterized digital peripherals, and can also be customized using Verilog code to implement uncommon functions and interfaces that traditionally require a low-power CPLD.

The programming and customization is simplified through the PSoC Creator™ integrated development environment (IDE). PSoC Creator provides fully tested, pre-packaged analog and digital peripherals easily customizable through user-intuitive wizards and APIs to meet specific design requirements. Additionally, the CY8C32xxx family includes basic analog peripherals such as a 12-bit Delta-Sigma ADC, internal voltage reference, 2 comparators and an 8-bit DAC to enable easy interfacing to analog signals. The new CY8C32xxx extends the PSoC 3 Architecture, powered by the high performance 8-bit 8051 processor, to a total of four families listed below, which each address different market segments:

This course gives an introduction to the development of components in the PSoC Creator environment. It covers the basic development of components using a schematic as the implementation methodology. It also includes the generation of symbols and the placement of the component into the component catalog.
• PSoC Creator 111 - Component Parameters
This course introduces the usage of parameters as part of the development of a component in PSoC Creator. Parameters allow a single component to have functionality that is specific to an instance of that component. Aspects of component parameters such as validation, enumerated types, and passing parameters to lower level instances are covered.
• PSoC Creator 112 - Introduction to Component API Generation
Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are used for the CPU to interact with a component in PSoC Creator. This course introduces the generation of APIs within components. APIs often use “Control” and “Status” registers as part of their implementation, so the usage of these registers is described.
• PSoC Creator 113 - PLD Based Verilog Components
Verilog is the implementation methodology used to describe the logic that is placed in the PLD portion of the programmable digital architecture used in PSoC 3 and PSoC 5. This course explains the PLD implementation used and the methodology used to map a Verilog description of digital logic to the physical implementation in the hardware. It shows the basic constructs used for both combinatorial and sequential logic in Verilog. It explains the differences introduced by development in Verilog for symbols and parameters.
• PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 201: Analog Peripherals II
This module builds on the previous analog module (PSoC 3 / PSoC 5: 104) and goes into more depth on the analog peripherals that can be implemented in PSoC 3 and PSoC 5 devices using PSoC Creator.
• PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 106: CapSense® Touch Sensing
This module introduces the CapSense touch sensing peripheral of PSoC 3 and PSoC 5 devices that can be implemented using PSoC Creator.

(NASDAQ: CY) today introduced two evaluation kits showing the ease-of-use, fast development time and flexibility of its new PSoC® 3 architecture for LCD segment drive applications. The new CY8CKIT-006 PSoC 3 LCD Segment Drive Evaluation Kit and the CY8CKIT-029 PSoC LCD Segment Drive Expansion Board Kit demonstrate how a single PSoC 3 device can drive up to 736 LCD segments, more than any microcontroller-based solution. With the kits, designers can leverage the drag-and-drop LCD Drive component in the PSoC Creator™ Integrated Development Environment (IDE) to quickly and easily design products with an LCD screen for the consumer electronics, handheld, medical, industrial, white goods, automotive and other markets.

Currently, design of LCD segments requires hundreds of lines of complex code to define a screen’s segment intersections. The set-up wizard in the PSoC Creator IDE now enables designers to visually map these intersections in an intuitive drag-and-drop style. The tool then provides the power to manually configure LCD pin locations or automatically routes all on-chip signals and can even direct I/O to the optimum pins if desired. The PSoC Creator IDE also provides all of the APIs required to write to the LCD screen instead of requiring designers to create them. The complete PSoC 3 platform significantly cuts development time for LCD applications.

The new PSoC 3 architecture delivers unparalleled flexibility for LCD Drive applications with up to 16 common pins, versus only 4 or 8 for microcontroller-based solutions. This reduces the number of I/Os required for an LCD screen, freeing up pins for more peripheral integration and providing the option for smaller packages. The architecture allows any GPIO to be set as an LCD pin for simplified routing, requiring fewer PCB layers. PSoC 3 devices offer software contrast control, eliminating the need for an external potentiometer. The devices integrate internal voltage generation requiring no external resistors or capacitors, and can drive an LCD screen with a battery voltage as low as 0.5V, enabling operation from a single solar cell. • “Reduce Power Consumption and Increase Processor Efficiency through Distributed Processing” – This presentation on Thursday, October 22 at 10:00 a.m. by Loren Hobbs, PSoC product marketing manager, discusses how an embedded system designer can reduce system power consumption and increase system efficiency and throughput through the use of distributed processing. By using the combination of a Direct Memory Access (DMA) engine and "mini-processors" to perform control algorithms, it is possible to create low power and highly efficient processing systems. By offloading the overhead of basic processing functions, the ARM processor is freed up to dedicate its instruction cycles to the more complex processing functions it is optimized for. This concept will be illustrated using examples of common functions in embedded systems, such as motor control.

• “Low-power Programmable and Integrated Mixed-Signal Processing System Using an ARM Core” – This presentation on Friday, October 23 at 1:00 p.m. by Ata Khan, vice president of technical staff, shows how to build low-power programmable and integrated mixed-signal processing systems using an ARM Core. Applications such as sensors and control loops can require analog and digital signal conditioning and processing, and interaction with an embedded processor. Some representative applications, their requirements, and mapping to a proposed solution will be presented. Ideally, the elements required to build a low-power mixed-signal processing system should be integrated and interconnected allowing for the lowest power and best efficiency as well as an integrated development environment.

• “A Painless Migration to 32-bit Designs” – This presentation on Wednesday, October 21 at 2:30 p.m. by Loren Hobbs will show how to evaluate the migration-readiness of a design and describe the latest techniques for ensuring a painless transition from 8-bits to 32-bits. Migrating from an 8-bit MCU to a 16-bit or 32-bit MCU poses significant challenges to embedded designers. Although 16- or 32-bit architectures can offer much greater flexibility with higher processing performance and data bandwidth, the required changes in board design and the need to learn new tools are often costly and time-consuming. Issues to be considered include whether the processor will be able to cope with an application’s unique demands, power consumption, pin compatibility, peripheral compatibility, tool migration, programming complexity, and availability of reference designs and code-ready development boards.

BANGALORE, India, September 17, 2009 - Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: CY) and Bhubaneswar Institute of Technology (BIT) announced a partnership to set up a Programmable System on Chip (PSoC®) lab at Bhubaneswar. The agreement was signed at Cypress headquarters in San Jose, California, by BIT Chairman, Dr. Rabi Mahapatra and Cypress University Alliance Director, Patrick Kane.

As part of the agreement, Cypress will provide hands-on training to the faculty and students of BIT, along with free hardware kits and software tools. BIT will provide the facilities for the laboratory.

BIT plans to immediately introduce PSoC training for its 120 students in Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE) and Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE), beginning with the students’ first year. It plans to develop courseware and lab material for its basic electronics labs on the PSoC platform. A two-semester course on PSoC has also been planned at BIT, in which the course materials will be developed by the faculty of BIT in collaboration with Cypress. The course will include both theories and practical lab sessions, with emphasis on allowing students to use PSoC in innovative applications and in their academic projects.

This Laboratory will expose the students to the PSoC platform, a flexible family of devices with programmable analogue and digital blocks integrated with a microcontroller. With its unique architecture, PSoC provides an unrivaled learning platform for embedded design students. The lab will also be used for training the local engineering community
