SAN JOSE, Calif., April 18, 2013 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (Nasdaq: CY) today announced that its TrueTouch® Gen4 controllers enable the “Magic Touch” feature in the new Ascend Mate smartphone from HUAWEI, which boasts one of the world’s largest smartphone touchscreens at 6.1 inches. Magic Touch lets users accurately navigate the touchscreen even with thick gloves on, solving a persistent problem for customers in cold-weather climates. The Gen4 TrueTouch controller also enables the Ascend Mate to offer outstanding water rejection and unmatched touchscreen performance in the presence of electronic noise sources.

The Magic Touch feature is enabled with patent-pending technology from Cypress available on Gen4 that is unavailable from other suppliers. The Gen4 family delivers an array of technologies the competition cannot match. It is the world’s only controller family with built-in 10V Tx to drive the touch panel at 10V. Because SNR is directly proportional to the voltage at which the panel is driven, this feature allows Cypress to sense smaller signals than the competitors in the presence of high noise sources. The Gen4 family also makes use of Cypress’s patented self plus mutual capacitance sensing technology. TrueTouch is the only solution with the ability to execute both self-capacitance and mutual-capacitance measurements in the same device—and switch dynamically between the two in application. These capabilities enable both the Magic Touch and water rejection features on the Ascend Mate.

The HUAWEI Ascend Mate combines superior performance with a unique set of features, ensuring end customers have an optimal touchscreen user experience. Its screen-to-body ratio is 73%, one of the highest in the industry, maximizing viewing pleasure for emails, video and games. The 6.1-inch HD IPS+ LCD screen has a resolution of 1280 x 720 for unsurpassed clarity and color accuracy. The Ascend Mate is also very slim, with a thickness of just 6.5 mm at its narrowest part.

"We’re excited to team with HUAWEI on this outstanding smartphone," said John Carey, Senior Director of TrueTouch Marketing at Cypress. “The Ascend Mate showcases many of the reasons that TrueTouch is the premier touchscreen solution in the industry.”

Cypress’s TrueTouch® Solution with Single-Layer Sensor Powers Touchscreen on New Vanzo Smart Phone http://www.cypress.com/?rID=75797 SLIM® Sensor Enables Popular Touch Gestures without Second Sensor Layer, Providing Differentiation for X1 Series Handset in High-Volume China Market

SAN JOSE, Calif., February 26, 2013 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (Nasdaq: CY) today announced that Vanzo Communication Inc., a global provider of mobile handset solutions based in China, has selected the TrueTouch® touchscreen solution for its X1 series Android smartphone. The touchscreen uses Cypress’s SLIM® (Single-Layer Independent Multi-touch) sensor to deliver high-performance accuracy and responsiveness with a true single-layer sensor panel. The SLIM sensor enables the phone to track common gestures such as pinch, zoom, flick, drag, swipe, and others requiring more than two fingers.

SLIM is the industry’s first true single-substrate, single-layer Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) touchscreen sensor in production. Unlike competitive solutions, it requires no additional insulation layers or bridges. The elimination of a second sensor layer can save mobile device manufacturers 40 percent or more on sensor costs, which is often the most expensive part of the touchscreen module. A single-layer structure also greatly reduces the thickness of the sensor module. A video on the SLIM sensor technology is featured at www.cypress.com/go/truetouch.

“Many smartphones on the market today in China do not offer capacitive touchscreens because of the cost, or they offer only basic touch features,” said John Carey, Senior Director of TrueTouch Marketing at Cypress. “The SLIM sensor enables outstanding multi-touch and gesture tracking for the Vanzo X1 series, and we believe the top-notch touchscreen interface will serve as a true differentiator for smartphones in high-volume markets.”

“The Cypress single-layer SLIM sensor delivers excellent multi-touch touchscreen performance and contributes to the sleek design of our X1 series phones, while still allowing us to offer them at a competitive price-point for the high-volume smartphone market in China,” said Liu Junming, General Manager of Vanzo.

Traditional capacitive touchscreens use a two-layer sensor to deliver the accuracy and linearity required for today’s user experience. Cypress’s proprietary algorithms interface with the single-layer SLIM sensor to deliver two-layer performance for an unparalleled combination of user experience and cost sensitivity.

The SLIM sensor can be deposited directly on the cover glass to create the thinnest touchscreen phones ever. The sensor pattern for SLIM is even more unique in that it can eliminate the requirement for a side bezel, normally about 2 mm on each side of the end product. This feature enables borderless display modules that allow OEMs to use larger displays without changing the form factor of the phone.

Cypress Introduces Industry's First True Single-Layer Sensor With Multitouch Capability http://www.cypress.com/?rID=59706 New SLIM® Sensor Enables Low-Cost Phones to Include Touchscreens with Popular Gestures; Opens up High-Volume Opportunities for Touchscreens in Low-Cost Markets

SAN JOSE, Calif., February 27, 2012 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: CY) today unveiled the industry’s first single-layer touchscreen sensor solution with multitouch capability. The new SLIM® (Single-Layer Independent Multitouch) sensor delivers high-performance touchscreen accuracy and responsiveness with a true single-layer sensor panel, drastically reducing the cost of the most expensive component of the touchscreen. It enables low-cost touchscreen phones to offer users the ability to perform gestures such as pinch, zoom, flick, drag, swipe and other gestures requiring more than two fingers.

Increasingly, capacitive touchscreens are viewed as a differentiator for mobile devices. Many lower-priced “feature phones” do not offer capacitive touchscreens today because of the cost, or offer only rudimentary touch features. The Slim sensor opens up new “feature phones” and lower-cost smartphones to capacitive touchscreens that include popular multi-finger gesture interfaces.

SLIM is a true single-substrate, single layer ITO touchscreen sensor.  Unlike competitive solutions, it requires no additional insulation layers or bridges. This reduces the cost versus multi-touch sensors by roughly 40%, and also greatly reduces the thickness of the sensor module. SLIM can be deposited directly on the cover glass to create the thinnest touchscreen phones ever.

The SLIM sensor pattern is even more unique in that it can eliminate the requirement for a side-bezel, normally about 2 mm on each side of the end product. This feature enables borderless display modules that allow OEMs to use larger displays without changing the form-factor of the phone.

“The ability to offer thinner, less expensive phones with true multitouch capability is a tremendous advantage for our customers,” said Dhwani Vyas, vice president of the User Interface Business Unit at Cypress. “We are making the SLIM sensor available with our Gen4 controllers, among others, to enable truly outstanding performance. Feature phones with top-notch touchscreen interfaces will be a true differentiator in many high-volume markets.”

The combination of the SLIM sensor and the Gen4 controller will allow the world’s slimmest touchscreen devices, as Gen4’s industry-leading noise immunity enables sensor-on-lens configurations that are directly laminated to the display with no shielding or air gaps.

Traditional capacitive touchscreens use a two-layer sensor to deliver the accuracy and linearity required for today’s user experience. Cypress has developed proprietary algorithms that interface with a true single-layer sensor with no bridges to deliver two-layer performance for an unparalleled combination of user experience and cost sensitivity. The removal of this second sensor layer can save mobile device manufacturers 40 percent or more on sensor costs, which is often the most expensive part of the touchscreen module.

Cypress's New Tx-Boost™ Feature for TrueTouch® Touchscreen Controllers Delivers Three Times Higher Signal-to-Noise Ratio Without Using Digital Filters http://www.cypress.com/?rID=58615 Proprietary Technology Based on Gen4 Patent-Pending High-Voltage Tx Drivers
Enables the Industry’s Thinnest Touchscreen Stack-ups and Reduces Material Costs

SAN JOSE, Calif., January 26, 2012 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: CY) today unveiled a breakthrough feature for its Gen4 TrueTouch® touchscreen controllers that dramatically improves system performance without added cost. Cypress has developed a new proprietary technology based on Gen4’s patent-pending high-voltage Tx drivers.  Tx-Boost™ extends Gen4’s performance leadership by delivering three times higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) than previously possible. This is accomplished without the use of performance-robbing digital filters or external components, enabling manufacturer’s to produce the industry’s thinnest handsets and tablets with low material costs.

The key to excellent touchscreen performance in noisy environments is high SNR. Gen4 already delivers up to four times the raw SNR of the competition through its internally generated 10V Tx circuitry; whereas competitive offerings require customers to use large, expensive, and noisy external switching regulators to generate high-voltage Tx signaling. The Tx-Boost feature, now available on all TrueTouch Gen4 devices, uses specialized hardware acceleration to triple the already best-in-class SNR of the Gen4 family. This high SNR enables manufacturers to employ sensor-on-lens with direct lamination to displays and in-cell architectures with flawless performance for the thinnest products in the market.

In addition, Tx-Boost efficiently parallelizes multiple operations in hardware, without burdening the CPU with costly digital filtering. This significantly increases Gen4’s scan speed, making the world’s fastest touchscreen controller even faster. These parallel operations also further improve Gen4’s industry-leading power consumption by increasing the amount of idle time during each scan period.

“We understand that touchscreen customers are in highly competitive markets and need constantly improving technology to stay ahead,” said Dhwani Vyas, Vice President of Cypress’s User Interface Business Unit. “We’re pleased to provide Tx-Boost to enable the industry’s best controller family to extend its leadership against competitive offerings. Customers who have seen this technology in action have been universally impressed.”

Availability
The Tx-Boost solution is now available on all Gen4 TrueTouch devices.

Cypress Launches Single-Chip TrueTouch® Controller Based on Gen4 Technology for Tablets, Ultrabooks and Laptops http://www.cypress.com/?rID=58043 New Solution Offers 65 I/Os; Delivers Unmatched Noise Immunity and Tracking Accuracy
With the Lowest Available Power for Touchscreens up to 12 Inches

SAN JOSE, Calif., January 10, 2012 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: CY) today introduced a new Gen4 TrueTouch® controller targeted at the rapidly growing tablet and ultrabook market. The new CY8CTMA1036 device has 65 sense-I/Os, enabling it to deliver flawless touchscreen performance for screens up to 12 inches. Like the smaller-screen Gen4 devices, it offers industry-best performance in all categories, including the world’s best signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and unparalleled performance in the presence of all noise sources—the biggest challenge faced by touchscreen designs. Gen4 also has the lowest active power consumption, unparalleled tracking accuracy and the fastest refresh rates. It provides full support for major mobile operating systems including Win8 and Android.

The new CY8CTMA1036 uses a 32-bit ARM® Cortex™ core, and offers 65 sensing I/O channels with support for up to 1036 nodes on the screen, 35 percent more than any other single-chip solution. Additional sensing channels are essential for greater accuracy, linearity, support for smaller sized fingers and the ability to resolve multiple fingers close together.

“We’re getting the same positive reaction from tablet manufacturers as we did from the handset sector,” said Dhwani Vyas, Vice President of Cypress’s User Interface Business Unit. “Customers are excited to apply the benefits of Gen4’s noise immunity, low power and superior performance in a single-chip package to their tablet designs. We’re sampling multiple customers now and expect to start production shipments by the end of this quarter.”

Breakthrough Noise Elimination
The Gen4 family was designed from the ground up to deliver the world’s highest SNR in real world applications. It is the first and only touchscreen IC that delivers built-in 10V Tx to drive the touch panel at 10V.  Because SNR is directly proportional to the voltage at which the panel is driven, this feature allows Cypress to offer nearly four times the SNR of the next closest competitor.

The Gen4 family further raises the SNR bar as the first touchscreen device family to completely eliminate display noise in hardware. Gen4’s patent-pending Display Armor™ offers unprecedented immunity to noise from every type of display, even noisy low-cost displays such as ACVCOM LCDs. This allows touchscreen designers to make their products thinner by removing the air gap between the display and the sensor, and also less expensive by removing the shield layer in the sensor. Display Armor allows Gen4 to operate seamlessly with direct lamination, on-cell and in-cell stackups, regardless of the display chemistry.

World’s Fastest and Lowest Power Touchscreen Controller
In addition to unmatched noise performance, the Gen4 platform offers the world’s lowest active power consumption of 2 mW, and a deep sleep mode that only draws 1.8 uW with wake-up via address match on the COM port. Shortened battery life is a common issue for smartphones and other portable touchscreen devices. Gen4 gives OEMs another tool to help solve this problem. The Gen4 product family also boasts the industry’s fastest refresh rate of 400Hz, and has the unique ability to scan a capacitive touch panel at 1,000 Hz – both industry-best metrics. This level of performance is enabled by the 32-bit ARM® Cortex™ core at the heart of the Gen4 products. The Gen4 family enables unlimited touch performance, while providing the industry’s best accuracy and linearity of 0.2 mm.

The Gen4 family also offers features that only TrueTouch can deliver, including waterproofing functionality that allows products to meet IP-67 standards; 1-mm stylus support for Asian character sets and accurate handwriting capture; and hover sensing to provide mouseover-like features and true fingernail or thick-glove support in mobile devices. Cypress’s unique, patent-pending ability to switch dynamically between self-capacitive and mutual-capacitive sensing methods in application enables these differentiating features. Cypress now has over 250 issued and pending patents pertaining to touchscreens. More information, including multiple videos, is available at touch.cypress.com.

Cypress’s Industry-Leading Gen4 TrueTouch® Controller Now in Production Ahead of Schedule http://www.cypress.com/?rID=57690 Extensive Design Activity with Initial Customer Revenue Expected in Q112

SAN JOSE, Calif., December 29, 2011 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: CY) today announced that its recently introduced Gen4 family of TrueTouch® touchscreen controllers is now in production ahead of schedule. Gen4 delivers industry-best performance in all categories, including the world’s best signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and unparalleled performance in the presence of all noise sources—the biggest challenge faced by touchscreen designs. Gen4 also has the lowest active power consumption, assisting manufacturers in solving the ever increasing battery life issues common to handheld touchscreen devices.

“Customer reaction to the Gen 4 products has exceeded our high expectations and is expected to set new design win records for our True Touch products,” said Dhwani Vyas, Vice President of Cypress’s User Interface Business Unit. “The ability to build thinner phones with flawless touchscreen performance without additional cost is proving to be extremely attractive to manufacturers. In addition, initial customer production shipments will begin in the first quarter of 2012, ahead of our previous estimates.”

In addition to unmatched noise performance, Gen4 offers the world’s lowest active power consumption of 2 mW, and a deep sleep mode that only draws 1.8 uW with wake-up via address match on the COM port.

Gen4 also offers more capacitive sensing I/O than the competition, while still fitting into the world’s smallest touchscreen packages. With up to 40 I/O for mobile phone applications, Gen4 can support up to four standalone CapSense® buttons while still delivering ideal sensor pitch for up to 5-inch screens.

Touchscreen Leadership

Cypress’s touch sensing portfolio is the industry’s broadest and most well adopted, encompassing both TrueTouch and CapSense® solutions. The Gen4 family is the latest in a string of touchscreen firsts from Cypress, the acknowledged industry leader in touch sensing. Examples include:

  • Cypress was the first to deliver tracking of unlimited touches.

Cypress Webinar on July 1 Teaches How to Simplify Capacitive Touch-Sensing Designs Through Integration http://www.cypress.com/?rID=44098 Free Online Seminar Hosted with EE Times Will Explore Leveraging Cypress’s
CapSense® Plus™ Solution to Control Additional Functions and Lower Overall System Costs

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 24, 2010 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (Nasdaq: CY) today announced a free, online seminar that shows designers how to create highly-integrated capacitive touch-sensing designs with programmable systems. The 60-minute webinar, entitled “Simplify Your Capacitive Touch-Sensing Designs,” will be presented in conjunction with EE Times on Thursday, July 1 at 9:00 a.m. PDT. Registration is available at www.techonline.com/learning/livewebinar/225600343.

Typical touch-sensing designs require multiple discrete components, each of which adds cost and occupies board space. The presenter will demonstrate how Cypress's CapSense® Plus™ family gives engineers more design flexibility through greater configurability and better performance of digital and analog resources for implementing PWMs, timers, communication interfaces such as I2C and SPI, ADCs and more. Leveraging a dedicated dual-channel interface allows a single device to implement multiple buttons and slider interfaces while managing functions such as motor control, intelligent sensing, LED control and more.

The CapSense family is based on Cypress’s PSoC® programmable system-on-chip architecture, allowing for dynamic reprogramming of analog and digital components in minutes. This enables designers to morph internal resources on-the-fly, utilizing fewer components to perform a given task. With fixed-function components, making changes can be time consuming and cause project delays. By contrast, a programmable approach enables designers to implement system changes with no new silicon and without having to redesign circuit boards. The webinar will teach designers how to leverage these programmable systems to accelerate time to market and lower overall system cost.

Enables Complete Matrix Keypad Solution without Software Tools, Firmware Configuration,
Device Programming or System Tuning

SAN JOSE, Calif., October 6, 2011 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (Nasdaq: CY), the market leader in touch-sensing, today announced the new CY8CMBR2016 device that enables designers to implement capacitive matrix button systems of up to 4 x 4 buttons without having to write firmware or learn new software tools. A matrix system is a row and column array of buttons typically found in keypad applications in a variety of industrial applications. This is the latest addition to the popular CapSense® Express™ capacitive touch-sensing controller line from Cypress that leverages Cypress’s revolutionary SmartSense™ Auto-tuning algorithm, which completely eliminates the requirement for system tuning and is the only solution that offers run-time environmental compensation.

The CY8CMBR2016 supports industry standard “keypad scan” and “truth table” host interface protocols, enabling customers to leverage their existing host processor firmware. The device also features multi-touch, perfect for matrix applications that require simultaneous button presses to enter various user interface modes. The CY8CMBR2016 operates over a 1.71 V to 5.5 V range making it ideal for a wide range of regulated and unregulated battery applications, and a supply current in run mode as low as 15 uA/button. It is targeted for applications such as security panels, card reader keypads, biometric scanner keypads, fire alarm control panels, thermostats, home appliances as well as any system requiring up to 16 individual CapSense buttons. More information is available at www.cypress.com/go/capsense.

SmartSense Auto-tuning dynamically optimizes the capacitive baseline and detection threshold for each button. It adjusts for the optimal capacitance sensing range at power-up and during runtime as environmental conditions change, including temperature, humidity, and noise. Eliminating the need to tune is a significant advantage for large and small manufacturers alike, as it saves engineering time and yield loss that can occur with even slight variations in manufacturing tolerances. Cypress Raises the Bar on all Measures of Touchscreen Performance with new Gen4 TrueTouch® Controller Line http://www.cypress.com/?rID=54578 New Family of Devices Delivers Industry's Best Noise Performance, Fastest Refresh Rate, Lowest Power and Highest Accuracy along with a Host of Exclusive Features

SAN JOSE, Calif., September 26, 2011 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: CY) today introduced its new Gen4 family of TrueTouch® touchscreen controllers. Gen4 delivers industry-best performance in all categories, including the world's best Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and unparalleled performance in the presence of all noise sources—the biggest challenge faced by touchscreen designs.

Breakthrough Noise Elimination
The Gen4 family was designed from the ground up to deliver the world's highest SNR in real world applications.

Gen4's patent-pending Display Armor™ offers unprecedented immunity to noise from every type of display, even low cost noisy displays such as ACVCOM LCDs.

“Customers have told us again and again that delivering flawless performance in the presence of noise is the biggest design hurdle they face," said Dhwani Vyas, vice president of Cypress's User Interface Business Unit. “Our Gen4 family with 10V Tx offers a quantum leap in performance in noise, including display noise that is often the most difficult to overcome. We are confident that competitive offerings will have a hard time meeting this performance."

“We forecast that the touchscreen module market will grow over 200% in the next several years, reaching $23 billion in 2017," said Dr. Jennifer Colegrove, Vice President, Emerging Display Technologies at DisplaySearch. "From our market research, it's apparent that projected capacitive touchscreen performance in the presence of electric noise is an important consideration. The controller ICs that could support add-on touch sensors as well as both on-cell and in-cell technologies with LCD displays will be very attractive."

World's Fastest and Lowest Power Touchscreen Controller
In addition to unmatched noise performance, the Gen4 product family offers the industry's fastest refresh rate of 400Hz, and has the unique ability to scan a capacitive touch panel at 1,000 Hz – both industry-best metrics. This level of performance is enabled by the 32-bit ARM® Cortex™ core at the heart of the Gen4 products. The Gen4 family enables unlimited touch performance, while providing the industry's best accuracy and linearity of 0.2 mm. Gen4 offers these features while boasting the world's lowest active power consumption of 2 mW, and a deep sleep mode that only draws 1.8 uW with wake-up via address match on the COM port.

Gen4 also offers more capacitive sensing IO than the competition, while still fitting into the world's smallest touchscreen packages. With up to 40 IO for mobile phone applications, Gen4 can support up to four standalone CapSense® buttons while still delivering ideal sensor pitch for up to 5-inch screens.

Cypress's unique, patent-pending ability to switch dynamically between self-capacitive and mutual-capacitive sensing methods in application enables these differentiating features. Cypress now has over 250 issued and pending patents pertaining to touchscreens. More information, including multiple videos, is available at touch.cypress.com.

“Our TrueTouch solution has been extremely successful based on its advanced feature set and ability to combat the multiple sources of noise in touch design," said Norm Taffe, executive vice president of Cypress's Consumer and Computation Division. “The Gen4 family extends our leadership in these areas and adds unmatched performance that our customers around the world have asked for. These customers are excited to develop the next generation of touchscreens using this technology."

Touchscreen Leadership
Cypress's touch sensing portfolio is the industry's broadest and most well adopted, encompassing both TrueTouch and CapSense® solutions. The Gen4 family is the latest in a string of touchscreen firsts from Cypress, the acknowledged industry leader in touch sensing. Examples include:

  • Cypress was the first to deliver tracking of unlimited touches.
  • Cypress was the first to deliver a true single-layer sensor solution for capacitive performance at resistive prices.
  • The new Gen4 family, as well as prior generations, is offered in the world's smallest CSP packages for important space savings in handsets.
  • Cypress is still the only company to offer the patent-pending self and mutual capacitance sensing on the same chip, enabling the development of advanced features like waterproofing, support for 1mm stylus, and hover without increased material or spatial costs.
  • Designed to work with major mobile platforms, including Android and Windows® 8.

Availability
Samples of the new Gen4 controllers are now available to lead customers. Cypress expects to deliver volume production to lead customers by the end of 2011. The family will be available in a 44-pin 5x5 QFN with 31 sense I/Os, a 48-lead 6x6 QFN package with 35 sense I/Os, a 49-ball WLCSP package with 36 sense I/Os, and a 60-ball WLCSP package with 40 sense I/Os. Cypress TrueTouch® Controllers Provide Industry's Best Waterproofing for Capacitive Touchscreens http://www.cypress.com/?rID=51873 Cypress Delivers Another Industry First with Flawless Touchscreen Operation across the TrueTouch Portfolio in Rain, Mist, Salt Water and High-Humidity Conditions

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 6, 2011 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: CY) today announced that its leading TrueTouch™ touchscreen controllers now offer the industry’s best waterproofing performance. Because water is conductive (like a finger touching the screen), capacitive touchscreens often suffer from false touches reported from water droplets, a thin film of water, or wet or sweaty fingers. Additionally, some of the leading smartphones today tend to “lock up” after water has been wiped off the screen. Manufacturers have worked around these problems with water repellant coatings and sensing technologies that can only operate accurately in the presence of small water droplets. Cypress has now enabled the next generation of technology improvements that allow TrueTouch customers to design high-performance touchscreens without expensive hydrophobic film or unintentional lock-ups inherent with other controllers.

Cypress’s TrueTouch devices deliver superior waterproofing due to their unique, patent-pending ability to execute both self-capacitance and mutual-capacitance measurements in the same device—and switch dynamically between the two in application. This capability, enabled by the flexible PSoC® architecture, is also at the heart of many of the other unique industry-leading features enabled by TrueTouch, including 1-mm stylus support and hover-sensing capability. .

“Waterproofing, stylus support and hover sensing are all examples of a real advantage of TrueTouch—the ability to enable advanced functions that help our customers to differentiate their products,” said Dhwani Vyas, vice president of the User Interface Business Unit at Cypress. “Performance in the presence of water is very important, especially in humid climates with the active lifestyle of users of mobile phone, tablets, e-readers, digital cameras and other consumer applications. TrueTouch delivers a far superior waterproofing solution, which our customers are eager to implement.”

In addition to its unique features, Cypress’s TrueTouch technology provides the industry’s best noise immunity, highest signal to noise ratio (SNR), lowest power consumption and more. In addition, TrueTouch provides highly accurate 1mm stylus tracking accuracy better than 0.7 mm, along with 120Hz refresh rates for full handwriting recognition.

Cypress Enables High-Performance Capacitive Touchscreens to Replace Resistive With New TrueTouch® Solution for Single-Layer Touchscreen Sensors http://www.cypress.com/?rID=51330 Sensors are Among the Most Expensive Components in Touchscreens and
Cypress Solution Lets Customers Offer Capacitive Touchscreens Benefits at Resistive Costs

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 16, 2011 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: CY) today unveiled a breakthrough feature for its TrueTouch™ touchscreen controllers that enables manufacturers of handsets, cameras, GPS systems and other mobile systems to offer the benefits of capacitive touchscreens at resistive touchscreen costs. The new feature available for Cypress’s CY8CTST241 (single-touch with one-finger gestures) and CY8CTST242 (adds limited two-finger gestures such as “pinch” and “zoom”) delivers high performance touchscreen accuracy and responsiveness with a true single-layer sensor panel, drastically reducing the cost of the most expensive component of the touchscreen.

Increasingly, capacitive touchscreens are viewed as a differentiator by buyers of new mobile devices. Capacitive advantages over resistive touchscreens include a more intuitive user experience, better transmissivity, lower power, increased reliability and better durability. Many lower-priced “feature phones” do not offer capacitive touchscreens today because of the cost. The new TrueTouch single-layer sensor opens up new “feature phones” and lower-cost smartphones to capacitive touchscreens, especially in major markets such as China and India.

The removal of this second sensor layer can save mobile device manufacturers 30 percent or more on sensor costs, and is available today for glass and film. Even with only one sensor layer, the TrueTouch solution delivers accuracy better than 1.25 mm, excellent signal-to-noise ratios, fast response times (80Hz), and best-in-class active power of 3.6mW.

“This is a significant advancement in that it opens up a very large part of the market to capacitive touchscreens,” said Dhwani Vyas, vice president of the User Interface Business Unit at Cypress. “All manufacturers realize the attractiveness of touchscreens, and Cypress is delivering the performance, durability and attractiveness of capacitive touchscreens at a significantly lower price. In fact, leading manufacturers are already beginning high-volume production with this solution.”

New Cypress TrueTouch® Feature Enables Touchscreens to Function Seamlessly with Extremely Noisy Battery Chargers http://www.cypress.com/?rID=48779 “Charger Armor™” Feature Avoids False Coordinates and Phantom Touches Common
with Inexpensive Chargers

SAN JOSE, Calif., February 14, 2011Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: CY) today unveiled a breakthrough feature for its TrueTouch™ touchscreen controllers that enables touchscreens in handsets, cameras, GPS systems and other mobile systems to function seamlessly while connected to noisy chargers. Low-cost, third-party and after-market battery chargers emit large levels of common-mode noise that adversely affects touchscreen performance, often resulting in inaccurate touch readings or phantom touches. Cypress’s new Charger Armor™ feature allows TrueTouch touchscreens to operate normally in the presence of extreme AC noise.

The new feature, which is available in Cypress’s CY8CTMA3XX TrueTouch family, is unique in the industry, and solves a common problem that mobile device manufacturers are struggling to overcome. Low cost chargers lack critical noise suppression components, and can generate tens of volts (peak to peak) across the frequency spectrum of 1Hz to 1MHz. These voltage spikes can go directly into the touch panel during the presence of touch, severely impacting touch performance. As such, many of the mobile phone vendors have worked together to create EN 62684 and EN301489, standards which regulate the noise spectrum for battery chargers. While Cypress’s TrueTouch technology alone can suppress noise at the levels of these standards, Charger Armor allows Cypress to go beyond the standards to deliver truly revolutionary charger noise immunity to the market, enabling mobile devices to operate with the lowest-cost chargers.

“Many of our customers struggle to overcome charger noise,” said Dhwani Vyas, vice president of the User Interface Business Unit at Cypress. “They are pleased to see an easy-to-implement, cost-effective solution to this problem. The flexibility of the PSoC-based TrueTouch architecture enables us to goes beyond simple frequency hopping and hardware filtering to address a wider range of noise issues than other touchscreen controllers. This is yet another example of Cypress’s leadership in providing innovative touchscreen solutions to problems such as LCD noise rejection, stylus support, water rejection, hover detection and others.”

Availability

The Charger Armor feature is available today, and Cypress expects customers to introduce systems with Charger Armor in the first half of 2011. A high-resolution photo depicting the feature is available at http://www.cypress.com/go/ChargerArmorPhoto.

Cypress Wins Legal Effort to Cancel Competitor's Registration of CapSense® Trademark in the European Union http://www.cypress.com/?rID=38120 EU Trademark Office Rules That Quantum Research Group “Acted in Bad Faith”
In Its 2007 Registration of Cypress’s CapSense Mark

SAN JOSE, Calif., August 11, 2009 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: CY) today announced that the European Union’s trademark registry, the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM), ruled that Quantum Research Group acted “contrary to honest practices in commercial matters” by trying to “impede” Cypress’s attempt to register its CapSense® trademark in the EU. The OHIM declared Quantum’s registration of the CapSense mark in the EU invalid and ordered the company to bear the costs incurred by Cypress in its application to cancel Quantum’s trademark.

Until it was acquired last year by San Jose, Calif.-based Atmel Corp., Quantum was one of Cypress’s competitors in the market for capacitive touch-sensing products. CapSense is the brand name and trademark of Cypress’s industry-leading touch solution.

The OHIM further ruled that Quantum had prior knowledge of Cypress’s use of the CapSense product name in the UK and other countries when Quantum registered the mark in 2007. The OHIM described the Quantum tactic as a “blocking” registration.

“What Quantum/Atmel couldn’t win with their technology in the marketplace, they tried to obtain by unscrupulous means, manipulating the trademark system to prevent Cypress from using its own well-established commercial brand and superior intellectual property,” said Cypress President and CEO T.J. Rodgers. “We applaud the court for its decision, enforcing standards of common sense and fairness in the resolution of this case.”

Cypress is the industry’s touch-sensing leader; its CapSense touch-sensing solution has replaced 3.5 billion mechanical buttons in mobile handsets, laptops, consumer electronics, white goods, automotive applications, and virtually any system that has a mechanical button or switch. The latest addition to Cypress’s touch-sensing portfolio, its TrueTouch™ solution, allows customers to design end products with LCD displays that incorporate gesture-based functions, including multi-touch gesture and multi-touch all-point solutions (the ability to track up to 10 touches simultaneously). TrueTouch works with industrial materials such as glass and plastics, giving customers maximum flexibility to create stylish, innovative industrial designs.

CapSense and TrueTouch are based on Cypress’s PSoC® programmable system-on-chip solution, a highly configurable architecture for embedded control design, integrating configurable analog and digital circuits with memory and an on-chip microcontroller. A single PSoC device can integrate as many as 100 peripheral functions saving customers design time, board space and power consumption while improving system quality and reducing system cost.

Cypress Webcast on December 10 Teaches Capacitive Touch-Sensing Interface Design from Start to Finish http://www.cypress.com/?rID=34916

Free Online Seminar Presents Design Best Practices from Touch-Sensing Market Leader

SAN JOSE, Calif., December 4, 2008 - Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: CY) today announced a free, online seminar that gives a detailed overview of designing capacitive touch-sensing interfaces. The 60-minute webcast entitled "Capacitive Touch-Sensing Design Best Practices" will be presented in conjunction with EDN.com on Wednesday, December 10 at 9:00 a.m. PST.

Touch-sensing is changing the way humans interact with products such as cell phones, PCs, consumer electronics, white goods, and automotive systems. Understanding and incorporating design best practices are critical to adding elegant capacitive touch-sensing interfaces to any system. The webcast will present topics such as printed circuit board layout guidelines, signal-to-noise-ratio management, filtering techniques, water-tolerant techniques, and design-for-manufacture. The presenters leverage expertise gained via design with Cypress's industry-leading CapSense™ touch-sensing solution. Interested parties can get more information and register at www.cypress.com/go/PR/CapacitveTouchwebcast.

"This webcast leverages years of capacitive touch-sensing expertise Cypress has accrued as the market leader," said Geoff Charubin, vice president for Global Marketing at Cypress. "The presentation will show system designers the basics of replacing mechanical buttons and sliders with sleek, touch-sensing interfaces, as well as sophisticated techniques for efficient, effective designs."

About CapSense

A single CapSense device can replace dozens of mechanical switches and controls with a simple, touch-sensitive interface. CapSense-based "button" and "slider" controls are more reliable than their mechanical counterparts because they are not prone to the environmental wear-and-tear that affects exposed buttons and switches. Cypress has garnered hundreds of CapSense design wins worldwide in applications that include mobile handsets, portable media players, white goods, computers, printers and automotive, among others.

Capacitive touch-sensing is fast becoming the solution of choice for front-panel display and media control applications. Increased durability, decreased bill of materials (BOM) and a clean, minimalist appearance make this elegant interface attractive to a wide range of designs. With Cypress's CapSense interface, a finger on the interface forms an electrical connection with embedded sensors, which work with the PSoC device to translate data about the finger's presence into various system control functions. The sensor itself is only a copper pad on the PCB, not an actual component.

Cypress's CapSense solution offers system designers numerous advantages over capacitive sensing products built around modules and sub-assemblies, including increased flexibility, reduced board space and lower cost. Because of the unique PSoC architecture, designers can easily integrate multiple functions (e.g., LED drivers and LCD displays), in addition to capacitive sensing. The PSoC CapSense solution also delivers benefits such as easy communications using either I2C, SPI or USB interfaces, the ability to implement both touchpad (x-y matrix) and linear slider applications with the same device, and the ability to make quick design changes using the flash-based PSoC architecture. In addition, users can complete CapSense designs quickly and easily using pre-configured and verified "user modules" and experience real-time sensor tuning and monitoring within Cypress's PSoC Designer™ Integrated Design Environment (IDE). Cypress's New Auto-Tuning SmartSense™ CapSense® Solution Revolutionizes Touch-Sensing Design http://www.cypress.com/?rID=39263 For the First Time, True Plug-and-Play Performance with No Need for Manual Tuning of Multiple Parameters, Enabling Customers to Get to Market Faster than Ever

SAN JOSE, Calif., November 3, 2009 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: CY), the market leader in touch-sensing, today announced an automatic tuning solution for its CapSense® capacitive touch-sensing devices. While existing solutions require engineers to perform time-consuming calibrations for up to 15 capacitive-sensing parameters, the new patent-pending SmartSense™ solution sets these automatically during the design process, significantly reducing development time. The solution dynamically optimizes the baseline and detection threshold and adjusts for the optimal capacitance range. The SmartSense capability greatly simplifies the replacement of mechanical buttons and sliders, allowing designers to create a single platform for multiple industrial designs without having to manually optimize performance for each design.

Engineers can simply incorporate the SmartSense firmware using the PSoC Designer™ embedded design tool and instantly develop touch-sensing interfaces that provide reliable operation over a wide range of capacitance values. This eliminates the need to retune a design each time the thickness or material used for the interface overlay changes, reducing time to market and saving development costs for customers. Furthermore, the solution ensures that manufacturing variations in PCBs, overlays and changes in noise environment are automatically calibrated out. For more information on the SmartSense CapSense solution visit www.cypress.com/go/capsense.

The firmware for the SmartSense capability is supported in Cypress’s new CY8C20xx6A CapSense devices with low-power 1.8V operation, which the company announced today in a related release (see “New Cypress CapSense® Device is Industry’s Lowest-Power, Configurable Touch-Sensing Controller”). "In our 2007 report on cellular tactile input, Cypress is noted as the clear leader in capacitive touch solutions for this market."

Capacitive sensing is fast becoming the solution of choice for front-panel display and media control applications. All of the circuitry for controlling the sensor is inside the PSoC device.

Cypress's CapSense solution offers system designers numerous advantages over capacitive sensing products built around modules and sub-assemblies, including increased flexibility, reduced board space and lower cost. Because of the unique PSoC architecture, designers can easily integrate multiple functions (e.g., LED drivers and LCD displays), in addition to capacitive sensing. The PSoC CapSense solution also delivers benefits such as easy communications using either I2C, SPI or USB interfaces, the ability to implement both trackpad (x-y matrix) and linear slider applications with the same device, and the ability to make quick design changes using the flash-based PSoC architecture. In addition, users can complete CapSense designs quickly and easily using pre-configured and verified "user modules" within Cypress's PSoC Designer™ 4.4 Integrated Design Environment (IDE), and experience real-time sensor tuning and monitoring with PSoC Express™ visual embedded system design tool.  Learn more about CapSense online at www.cypress.com/capsense."
