Matt's Tips: The PSoC Creator Document Manager

As a PSoC user, one of the things I run into is being able to find the right piece of documentation for the specific task I am trying to accomplish.  Cypress has a ton of documentation, but sometimes I feel like I need to be a search expert to find it all.    To the rescue comes the document manager in PSoC Creator.  You call it from the Help menu in PSoC Creator. See the picture below:

You can also call it from the Windows start menu (it's called PSoC Document Manager). The Document Manager will launch in a separate window and allows you to search through a variety of resources including:

  • The standard PSoC Creator Help,
  • Component Datasheets,
  • Application Notes,
  • Reference Guides, and even
  • Device Datasheets.

If you are connected to the internet, documents from the Cypress website will be included automatically.  You can even set up Bookmarks for things you bring up frequently (for me it's the keyboard shortcut bindings, see my previous blog entry). Give the PSoC Creator Document Manager a try and hit me up in the comments with your thoughts.  Happy PSoC Creating.

Thanks for the tip. One of the big gripes I've long had with [another embedded microcontroller company whose name begins with M] is that you have to download at least ten different datasheets and addenda for every chip they make, and you can never figure out where they all reside. And I've had a similar gripe with [a programmable logic company whose name begins with X] that they've got a similar problem of their documentation being scattered all over the website. Sure, it's there. But happy hunting for it all. And don't even think of trying to find it from inside [tool whose name begins with V].

Particularly nice with Creator is the fact that if you keep it up to date, when you pull down a component datasheet, you get the one for the current component, also -- which is not always guaranteed if you go to your favorite search engine and type in the component name. In fact, with a lot of engines, it takes a while for the latest link to the newest version of a component to bubble up to page one. So the first link you hit may be for something three years old, just because that's what 10,000 people before you have visited.

I can't stress enough what a useful feature it is to be able to find documents -- and current ones at that -- from within the tool in a reasonably context-sensitive way.

Thanks for the thoughtful comments, Eric. We have plans to extend the document manager capability outside of Creator - to all of Cypress. Details to follow in the near future.

It seems like folks are no longer impressed with basic search capability. That's a good thing. Keeps all of us in high tech on our toes.
