Better Living through Robotics

Recently, a customer demo’ed for me a cool end product that included a group of robotic tools doing precision micro work on a patient during surgery. Because preserving and improving a human life was involved this time, I found myself amazed (again) at how far our engineering feats have come.

As I stood there, my mind jumped back to a shiny new, dark blue, hard-bound textbook from my undergraduate years. Embossed in brilliant gold letters on the front cover were the words “Control Theory”. I remember distinctly that crisp feel of opening that cover for the first time and feeling the resistance of the virgin unbent paper on its inside seam. The wonderful smell of a new book always filled me with anticipation of where its pages might take me; it still does.
 
I then recalled all the scribbled notes I’d made during late night struggles with the control loop concepts on those pages, and the way my textbook aged with me that year as it was banged around in my backpack and mistreated during late night homework sessions.  That book stayed on my shelf for years as I changed jobs and offices, providing occasional references and answers. The internet and Google have replaced its need to be on my shelf today, though I know the box in my attic where it can still be found.
 
I chose not to become a “Control Theory” expert in my career. But I’ve been able to watch the numeric control guys and the robotic guys as their industry has moved from a new crisp textbook to a well worn and well understood old friend. That work has made miracles happen: enabled industries, created new behaviors and cultures, and improved and saved lives.
 
I visit many robotic and control accounts because Cypress memory is always a key component. Non-volatile serial memories like our serial nvSRAM keep transaction logs of individual axes of movement so that a position is maintained over any power glitch. Our largest non-volatile nvRAM’s allow retention of vast amounts of current state data, configuration settings, and error and software logs on power disrupts. We are constantly working to define and make better memories that will enable the control machines of tomorrow do things smaller, better, faster, and with more precision. 
 
It is always rewarding to represent the leader of the SRAM industry and know that we are committed to do whatever it takes to help our customers keep making new and better miracles happen.
