Reduction ad absurdum

When in College I decided to take login from the Philosophy Department instead of the Computer Science department. One of the best decisions I ever made.  I learned a concept call Reduction ad absurdum (reduce to the absurd.)
Reductio ad absurdum is a mode of argumentation that seeks to establish a contention by deriving an absurdity from its denial, thus arguing that a thesis must be accepted because its rejection would be untenable. It is a style of reasoning that has been employed throughout the history of mathematics and philosophy from classical antiquity onwards.
This is if your conclusion is absurd then there was something wrong with one of your assumptions. I find many people when they get an absurd conclusion they just dismiss it. Probably the best problem solving tool I have found.
