IEEE

I was looking for some technical articles and I came by a couple of interesting sounding titles on the Internet. On closer inspection I found that I needed to be a member of IEEE to get free access to them. Why? My feeling is that the majority of the articles were written by researchers working with government-financed grants or by University researchers again being financed with taxpayer money. By my accounting I have already paid for them so I should be able to read them. I became an engineer back when Irwin Feerst was actively trying to get the IEEE to be more responsive to the needs of the average working engineer. I was so disgusted by their lack of support for engineering consultants, when lobbing for the new tax code, that I pretty much lost any interest in ever being a member.

In one of my columns I offered to e-mail copies of Sallen and Key’s famous 1955 article. I was told that that was illegal. It’s pretty bad when I can’t legally have a copy of a 55 year old paper.  The Sonny Bono Copyright extension act (Mickey Mouse Protection act) gives the IEEE copy write protection for 120 years (Sonny wanted infinity but that would violate the Constitusion) . So I’ll be sending out that article in 65 more years.
