Beijing

Having the Olympics here has had to lasting effects. First they gave the city a good scrubbing. It cleaned up good. The second is that driving here has become an Olympic sport. Drivers take it as a major defeat if you merge in front of them. Apparently lines in the road are a suggestion. Even the public buses drive aggressively.

I am a big hit with the Engineers because I have a slight resemblance to Chairman Mao. So I am Chairman Dave. China is undergoing a transformation from building stuff other have designed to design there own stuff. It is a hard transformation for them and it should keep me employed for a while longer.

Beijing used to be Peking and they are famous for their Peking Duck. You would think they would call it Beijing Duck, but no. I went to a famous restaurant that has been around for over a hundred years. They gave the documentation for the duck they served us. At least it only had a serial number and not a name. (I named it Dinner) They had duck shaped chopstick holders. They serve it all, feet kidneys, and head are included. Here is a picture of it picking at the leftover duck head.  (Split and deep fried) Now you find this either disturbingly funny or just plain sick. Let me know by e-mail which camp you fall into.

I went to the Forbidden City. This was the Emperor’s estate. It is a huge place because the Emperor might have 3000 concubines. (Do the math! 8 years 2 months, 2 weeks, four days.). I highly recommend going there and it is definitely one of the sights you should see in your lifetime.
