I was flying home Friday evening from Seattle and I got a complementary first class upgrade. This is great! Dinner tonight is three scotch and sodas. As I am waiting I see an enlisted man going home. Damn, I thought, no more upgrade. Being first class, I got on first and when this solder came on I asked him what seat he had, He said 22 delta. and I told him this was an Alaska flight not Delta and he better sit in my seat till we got it figured out. He graciously tried to reject the offer but I insisted. I mean I'm going home to celebrate Independence Day, reading a newspaper, in English, it seemed only proper to pay respect to those that make it possible. When I got up the other 11 people applauded. I said I sure hope that was for him because I am not putting myself in any harms ways by going back to sit in steerage. After landing I was waiting for my luggage and a couple who had been sitting in 1st class came over to say how touched they were with my gesture and they would now look for opportunities to help the enlisted when they traveled. I said you don’t wait for opportunities, you make them. I pointed to the soldier waiting for his duffle, holding on to a very pretty smiley young lady. I told the couple from 1st class that one of them should go over to thank the young man, shake his hand, and palm him a twenty.. Tell him that in a couple of hours they will most likely would be really really hunger so go buy a pizza. They did just that and the soldier grinned, the young lady blushed and all went home a bit happier. Oh well the airline scotch sucks anyway.
