What do you want to be called?
Feb 20, 2013
By

I was lucky to have had the chance to come to Cypress and work on PSoC.  At the interview,I immediately got it and told my wife this is the part I had been waiting for my whole career.  I have also met Engineers with as much passion or maybe more (Robert Ashby. David Smith, Barry Bines, and Gray Smock come to mind.)  I have referred to these people as zealots.

Well Cypress would like to put together a program to recognize these people and treat them with the respect they deserve as the Engineering gods that they are!  The problem is that some in the company feel the term zealot may be offensive to some.  Now this doesn t even make the top ten things offensive things I have said last year.  (Cypress has a whole wing of HR people that deal with the problems I cause.)  Cypress wants to call them Ambassadors.  With that name we should give them sports coats, funny hats, and hope they don t get beat up in the school yard.  (That last statement is even more offensive than zealot!)

 Questions

Do you find the term Zealot offensive?

Do you have a suggestion?

What do you think of PNuT ?

PSoC Pearl ?

PSoC Patriot ?

What would you like to be called?

I'll give a 5LP kit away for the best response!

I'm afraid that Pnut is as bad as Psucker even if you pronounce it PSoCer, but what's about PWIZ or PSoC wiz!
If all fails, just call me Bob.

Just at lunch we discussed this topic and decided that for a non-native-english-speaking individuum it is really a challenge. But to our astonishment a new word-construct was brought up: The PSoCcessor. Sounds a bit like "Professor" and applies to "Success" which you certainly will have with PSoCs.
I'd like to be called PSoCcessor !

I am thinking maybe " Cypress Sage"

According to Plato

A philosopher (literally lover of wisdom in Greek) does not have the wisdom he or she seeks. The sage, on the other hand, does not love or seek wisdom, because he already has wisdom.

I think that is another way of saying "Gets It"

Zealot would probably appropriate if it didn't connote madness! I considered 'enthusiast' which just does not cover it. So, I cheated and went to a thesaurus.

'Champion' sounded good at first, but that could be taken to mean winner rather than 'advocate'.

I kinda like 'proselyte' because of its relative obscurity and it starts with 'P'. That however is too much like 'proselytizer' which connotes someone knocking on your door on Sunday morning to tell you that if you don't believe as they do, you are going to 'H-E-double hockey sticks'.

I am selecting 'Revolutionary' as my pick because we 'ardent adopters' challenge the status quo as does the PSoC itself.

If you want to reflect their knowledge, why not call them "PSoC Masters" (or maybe "Masters of PSoC") or "PSoC gurus"? (guru incidentally also means "teacher" in indian)

But when you want to describe them as enthusiasts, call the "aficionados". And when you want to give them funny hats, call them "wizards".

I find "Zealot" too much connected to religious wars and fights, and "ambassador" seems always to have a political aspect to it. Maybe call them "Evangelists"? They life for their true belief, and try others to convert to it...

Zealot does not bother me; I like the term and try to practice it most days.

My suggestion is: PSoC Protagonist. It can be shortened to P^2 to fit on the hats, coffee mugs, and label buttons (etched in silicon of course). After all, we are all actors in the theater called Silicon Valley.

It can be extended to: PSoC Protagonist & Practitioner (P^3) for the inner circle. Their three sided label buttons would be tinted to match rubylith.

For Mr. Van Ess and the other four engineers he mentioned, I would suggest elevation to the fourth power: PSoC Protagonist, Practitioner, and Promoter (P^4). Their P4 wardrobe accessory would be Bluetooth/NFC enabled and suck money out of the electronic wallets of the clueless that got too close to Cypress Cabal.

Mr. Rodgers is, unsurprisingly, P^5, and that will be the name on the latest wine he releases.
