PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 LCD Drive Solutions

Last Updated: 04/04/2011
Version: Version**

Works With: Hardware CY8C38xxx Software PSoC Creator 1.3
This application IP discusses the electrical parameters that affect the operation of LCD glass.

OVERVIEW

LCD Drive is a new feature being introduced with the PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 families. Whereas PSoC 1 devices could only control (or within limited parameters drive) an LCD and thus required an external driver chip, PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 devices can drive an LCD without an external MCU. PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 devices provide single-chip solutions that contain superior and flexible LCD drivers with integrated analog capability.

With PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 LCD Drive Solutions, you can:

Drive Up to 16 Commons

  • Drive complex displays without an external driver
  • Drive simple displays with fewer pins
    • More pins for peripheral integration

Use PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 Internal Voltage Generator

  • No need for external resistors or capacitors
  • Drive LCDs anywhere in industry-leading 0.5V-5.5V range

Configure LCD Pin Locations

  • Shorter traces
  • Fewer PCB layers

Implement High Level APIs

  • Less application code

Easily Debug your Application

  • LCD active in debug

Drive Multiple LCDs with one PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 Device

  • Plenty of commons, segments, and I/Os to drive multiple displays
  • Add more product functionality; reduce even more BOM

Configure your LCD with PSoC Creator Software’s Simple GUI

  • No setup coding required

Drive vs. Control

Control of an LCD is different than driving an LCD because driving requires specific waveforms. Since PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 devices can create these waveforms using an analog multiplexer, they can now drive LCDs standalone.

This new LCD drive feature makes PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 devices a good fit for applications requiring an LCD because PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 devices now integrate what was a two-chip solution onto a single chip. This means lower BOM costs and higher peripheral integration for the customer.

FEATURES

PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 LCD Segment Drive:

  • 2 to 768 pixels or symbols
  • Static, 1/3, 1/4, and 1/5 bias supported
  • 10 to 150 Hz refresh rate
  • Integrated bias generation between 2.0V and 5.2V with up to 128 digitally controlled bias levels for dynamic contrast control
  • Configurable low power LCD drivers for long battery life and operation during sleep
  • Supports both type A (standard) and type B (low power) waveforms
  • Pixel state of the display may be inverted for negative image
  • 256 bytes of display memory (frame buffer)
  • User-defined pixel or symbol map with optional 7-, 14-, or 16-segment character; 5×7 or 5×8 dot matrix; and bar graph calculation routines

PSoC 3 / PSoC 5 LCD Character Control:

  • Implements the industry standard Hitachi HD44780 LCD display driver chip protocol
  • Requires only seven I/O pins on one I/O port
  • Built in character editor to create user defined custom characters
  • Horizontal and vertical bar graphs
