Applications and Considerations of Capacitive Proximity Sensing

Proximity sensing enables a range of unique usability, design, and functional benefits for end-users of industrial applications.  For example, light guides can be used to enhance accuracy of user interface selection in dark environments. Coupled with the use of capacitive sensing, user interface keys can be hidden from view when fingers are not in proximity of the keys. Proximity sensing can also be used in conjunction with Bluetooth devices to decrease connection negotiation lag from sleep.  This article will focus on key factors associated with mechanical and system design to achieve high-yield proximity designs in production, including sensor to ground coupling and managing LCD noise.
