Cypress nvSRAM offers the high performance of traditional SRAM with the added benefits of nonvolatility. Each memory cell is comprised of a traditional SRAM cell coupled with a nonvolatile SONOS-based EEPROM cell. During normal operation, nvSRAM functions as a fast SRAM, providing full random read and write access to the memory array without block or page erase times. A dedicated internal microcontroller constantly monitors the power supply. Upon power interruption, the data in SRAM is automatically written to the built-in EEPROM cells, without an external battery. When power returns, the data is automatically and quickly restored to SRAM. Additionally, nvSRAM provides an optional, integrated real-time clock to simplify and to consolidate product designs. The real-time clock is full featured and offers clock, alarm, watchdog, interrupt and control functions. nvSRAM has the fast signal timing and operating behavior of a standard SRAM but with data that can survive any power fault.
