Using the SPI interface in slave fifo 32 Bit mode

In my application I want to use the 32 Bit slave fifo interface together with the SPI module. Unfortunately the SPI interface cannot be activated while in 32 Bit slave fifo interface but in my case it would be acceptable to temporarily set the slave fifo to 16 Bit while activating the SPI interface. Is there a way to do this?

The ConfigureIOMatrix() function can only be called once, so how can I enable the SPI interface at a later point in my application, while setting the slave fifo to 16 Bit mode. Any suggestions? Thanks.
