Boot from SPI Flash

How can I get the SPI boot working? I can program the SPI flash using the new Bet 3 of Control Center. This is done without error message and I can observe SPI activity on flash during programming. (J101 to J104 put to SPI) But I dont get the FX3 booting from the flash. I removed J97 for F on PMOD(1), closed J96 and J98 and put the SW25(3) to on. So I have 0F1 on the PMOD pins, but the FX3 does not try to boot from SPI flash. After reset or power on it enumerates as "WestBridge"  (04B4/00BC). I cannot see any SPI activity on the flash pins. What can I do?

Hi Chris,

The first version of the chip does not support SPI boot. The next revision WILL support this. Sorry for the inconvenience this has caused you.

Anand

OK, no problem. So I will order a I2C EEPROM and test with the I2C Boot. Can I use the microchip 24LC1025 instead of 24LC1024?

We have received some CYUSB3014 chips. Can we say for sure based on the below lot number if those chips are able to boot from SPI flash or not?

Device: CYUSB3014-BZXIES

Lot No: 611134664Q0

Date Code: 1125

Thanks.

Silvio

We'll be able to find the revision and whether it is supports SPI boot from the date code/chip markings. Please create a tech support case so that one of our engineers would be able to assist you with this.

We have two FX3 DVK's one with an older datecode (1113) and one with a newer one (1147). If setting PMODE to SPI-Boot then I see with a scope that the newer one try to read data from SPI-flash. But it doesn't work. What I have done, I program the SPI-Flash with the Cypress ControlCenter application and have taken an firmware image file from the SDK e.g. bulksourcesink. This file is generated with the elf2img utility.

- Is this correct to take such an img-file generated with elf2img ?

- Do anyone make same tests trying to boot from SPI-Flash ?

best regards

Uli

Another point for disucussion. On the eval DVK's I can found a SPI-Flash device M25P40. The application note AN70193 (http://www.cypress.com/?rID=52343) describes the spi booting only for SPI-Eeproms. From the pinout these devices are the same but not for programming data. The CyControl application do not explicit handle any spi-flashes (different SPI-Flashes within a table).

Can anyone clarify which devices should be used for SPI-boot ?

best regards Uli
